About The Position

Face to Face Health and Counseling is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing economic and health equity for youth ages 11–24. We do this work through a comprehensive approach that includes housing, mental health, medical, youth justice, education & employment, and community services. We take a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach to our work and center the needs of young people impacted by racism and other forms of oppression and marginalization. Founded in 1972, Face to Face serves more than 3,000 youth annually. The Day Shelter Cook position is responsible for providing two meals a day for approximately 100 youth in the day shelter space to support youth to overcome homelessness. This position is 37.5 hours a week.

Requirements

  • High School degree or equivalent required.
  • Experience working in an industrial kitchen or in the food service industry.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising good judgment in involving others when necessary.
  • Experience with a positive youth development and harm reduction approach.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High reliability and integrity.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to do what it takes to meet youth needs.
  • Good crisis management skills and the ability to navigate stressful situations well.
  • Knowledge of homelessness and its impact youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse ethnic, economic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
  • Reliable form of transportation for delivery and pickup of SafeZone supplies.
  • A valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience working with homeless or at-risk youth preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute all food service operations at SafeZone, preparing/serving hot meals daily and providing meals to go.
  • Manage kitchen inventory and create supply lists weekly for meals, snack bags, and food safety/serving/handling needs.
  • Procure and pick up food and supplies from partner agencies working food rescue items into meals.
  • Plan, prepare, and serve meals in accordance with MN Department of Health Guidelines (will provide training for this if a serve safe certificate is not already acquired).
  • Maintain clean, organized, and tidy kitchen space, following recommended daily cleaning tasks.
  • Provide excellent customer service while serving meals.
  • Engage with youth at the center in a meaningful and respectful manner while assisting them.
  • Respond to crises and de-escalate situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Collect and record appropriate data, complete paperwork, and stay current with monthly trainings.
  • Refer youth to agencies for supportive services, case management and mental health support.
  • Lead and work with volunteers on various kitchen tasks and during events.
  • Attend all staff meetings, trainings, and events.
  • Provides all services guided by the evidence-based principles for helping youth overcome homelessness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
