About The Position

The Cytology Technologist (Cytotechnologist) provides a full range of cytologic services within a reference laboratory setting, supporting direct patient care by evaluating cytological specimens, including fine needle aspirations, without direct supervision. This role requires a high degree of diagnostic expertise, precision, and knowledge of laboratory procedures and pathology standards. The technologist supports the overall mission of the medical treatment facility by ensuring timely and accurate cytologic evaluations in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in cytotechnology or Completion of a cytotechnology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or equivalent, acceptable to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Certification: Current Cytotechnologist certification/registration by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or other certifying agency as specified in Exhibit 5 of the contract.
  • Experience: At least one (1) year of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a cytotechnologist in the cytopathology section of a reference laboratory.
  • Provide diagnostic support by independently evaluating fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens.
  • Assess bedside adequacy, process, and triage bone marrow/aspirate specimens in real time.
  • Determine appropriate triage of obtained specimens for further diagnostic studies.
  • Review negative smears for quality and diagnostic accuracy.
  • Identify and troubleshoot indicators of instrument or process malfunction; implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Prepare cytology specimens for in-house laboratory processing or external shipment.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of biological waste in compliance with safety standards.
  • Utilize clinical automation systems, including the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and DMHRSi (Defense Medical Human Resources System internet); training provided before start of duties.
  • Perform additional cytotechnology-related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain compliance with Joint Commission and College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards in all work performed.
