About The Position

The UHealth Laboratories Department at the University of MIami has an exciting opportunity for a Supervisor, Medical Technologists in the UTower Hospital. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Supervisor, Medical Technologists (H) provides leadership and supervision for clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Florida State License as a Cytology Supervisor
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, orients, trains, evaluates, and monitors on-the-job performance of staff responsible for performing microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease.
  • Verifies identification of specimen with physician’s orders.
  • Prepares specimen for testing and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.
  • Supervises all research and prepares all pertinent patient data and refers to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Assists in monitoring staff productivity and quality of work through proactive reviews of attendance and scheduling accuracy.
  • Initiates performance management processes that address on-going performance issues.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action and provides supervision to laboratory subordinates in resolution of similar problems.
  • Runs quality-control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording.
  • Seeks help from the section head and documents actions taken.
  • Performs and reviews quality controls in testing and decides whether results are within acceptable ranges.
  • Advises technologists and other healthcare providers on proper methods of collection of specimens.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Oversees daily workflow for: Gynecologic cytology (Pap testing) Non-gynecologic cytology (body fluids, respiratory, urine, brushings) Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) specimens, including rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) coordination
  • Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning, triage, processing, staining, screening, and pathologist review.
  • Maintains turnaround time targets for routine and stat cytology specimens.
  • Oversees preparation methods including: Conventional smears Liquid-based cytology Cytospins Cell block preparation
  • Ensures adequacy assessment workflows are standardized and compliant.
  • Oversees: Cytology quality indicators (e.g., ASCUS/SIL ratios, rescreen rates, false-negative tracking) Proficiency testing participation 10% rescreening and retrospective reviews
  • Maintains cytology QA documentation and corrective action plans.
  • Leads internal audits, competency assessments, and inspection readiness activities.
  • Ensures validation and documentation of new instruments, stains, reagents, and workflows
  • Supervises cytotechnologists, cytology preparatory staff, and support personnel.
  • Oversees hiring, onboarding, training, competency assessments, and annual performance evaluations.
  • Ensures staff maintain required certifications and continuing education.
  • Develops schedules, and coverage plans to meet workload demands.
  • Provides coaching, corrective action, and professional development support.
  • Monitors productivity metrics, workload volumes, staffing efficiency, and turnaround times.
  • Implements Lean/process improvement initiatives to optimize specimen flow and reduce errors.
  • Leads root cause analyses for errors, delays, specimen adequacy issues, and customer complaints.
  • Coordinates downtime procedures and contingency planning.
