About The Position

The Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Custodian provides custodian service in assigned areas for Extension Education Center. Clean, dust, polish, vacuum, wet mop, sweep, and maintain floors on a regular basis. Deep and general cleaning of all offices, common areas, meeting rooms, teaching kitchen, commercial kitchen, storage areas, and entryways. Empty/clean all waste receptacles, remove trash, compostables, and recyclable materials. Use and maintain assigned equipment and hand tools while ensuring storage room is orderly and neat. Clean restroom facilities daily; supply with sufficient paper products. Wash walls, windows, and sills on a regular basis. Sweep/shovel snow from stair/walks to building; keep entrances clean from debris. Responsible for complying with all OSHA/PESH safety regulations in performance of duties. This is a part time, 20 hours per week, benefits eligible position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months volunteer or work-related experience.
  • Basic Computer Skills including use of e-mail and computer-based time collection.
  • Physical ability to do heavy lifting (able to lift and carry 50 pounds), to shovel snow, carry supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to climb and perform work from a ladder.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide cleaning, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Knowledge of cleaning, maintenance, and repair methods, materials, and techniques applicable to public buildings.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete work within a reasonable time frame.
  • Ability to identify and address safety concerns in the workplace.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with established health and safety regulations and guidelines including OSHA/PESHA regulations.
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.
  • Record use and storage of all chemicals and cleaners utilized in MSDS record book as required.
  • Interact with clientele, staff, volunteers, and the public in a courteous and respectful manner at all times.
  • Clean and maintain appliances and equipment such as refrigerators, stoves, hot water heaters, furnaces, lawn mowers, tractors, floor scrubbers, etc.
  • Set up and tear down meeting facilities.
  • Alert Executive Director of any major problems or repairs needed.
  • Perform a substantial amount of routine, non-complex tasks to support the facilities administration of the Association.
  • Building Cleaning/Upkeep/Security: On a daily, weekly or monthly basis as directed clean and maintain all rooms/entrances/hallways/common areas of all buildings, including emptying waste baskets/trash; cleaning washroom facilities and replacing lavatory supplies; mopping/sweeping/waxing/vacuuming; keeping storage areas free of fire hazards and debris; cleaning entrance rugs; cleaning windows/doors; dusting window sills, cabinets, other furniture, and shelves, and all other tasks as assigned. Includes maintaining security of buildings and grounds (opening, closing and locking doors, etc.)
  • Vehicle/Equipment/Lighting Upkeep: Assist in the minor troubleshooting and scheduling of routine maintenance/inspections of vehicles and equipment as directed; replace bulbs and/or ballasts of interior/exterior lighting when necessary, keep light fixtures clean; routine maintenance of building(s) mechanical equipment, including furnaces, air conditioners, ice machine, refrigeration units, etc.
  • Vehicle/Equipment Record Maintenance: maintain a log of activities and duties performed on vehicles/equipment and any other forms, paperwork, records, etc. as assigned.
  • Storage: Assist with the storage and removal from storage of cars and recreational vehicles as directed.
  • Special Events: Set up and clean-up for events and meetings according to schedule and as directed, including emptying trash, cleaning restrooms and restocking supplies, sweeping/cleaning/mopping/vacuuming/waxing floors, taking down and setting up tables and chairs, etc., interacting with and assisting customers and catering staff as needed and directed.
  • Sullivan County Youth Fair: Prepare, clean and maintain grounds, buildings, driveways, etc., before, during and after fair; assist with fair set up and tear down; manage trash/debris removal. Work hours will be adjusted during this period.
  • Grounds Maintenance: Perform landscape and road/sidewalk maintenance such as: mow grass as directed, maintain shrubbery and area around shrubs, weeding, fertilizing, rolling, etc.; snowplow, shovel and salt driveways, building entrances, parking lots, etc. Includes operation of small hand/motor equipment (lawn mower, weed eater, shovel, etc.) and large motor equipment (tractor, snow plow, etc.)
  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Maintain respectful and professional interactions with clientele, staff, volunteers and the public.
  • Assist the Cornell Cooperative Extension system in reaching out to various audiences.
  • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Sample County policies, procedures and Cornell Cooperative Extension Skills for Success.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the organization by performing all assigned duties in a professional, timely and accurate manner.
