About The Position

This position will serve within Fort Laramie National Historic Site's Cultural Resources program. The primary responsibility of this position relates to the care, maintenance, preservation, study, and increasing public enjoyment of the park's museum, library, and archival collections, including supporting records, exhibits, and social media. Fort Laramie National Historic Site was a vital civilian and military outpost during the westward movement of emigrants in the 1800s. The site consists of various historic structures and is located on 833 acres. The park is situated in southeastern Wyoming, 3 miles west of the town of Fort Laramie, and 23 miles west of Torrington (the county seat, population 6,500). The small surrounding communities have post office facilities, stores, schools, and churches. In addition to these, Torrington has medical facilities, and a Junior College. The park is also 50 miles west of Scottsbluff, NE; 100 miles north of Cheyenne, WY; and approximately 3 hours from Denver, CO. No government housing is available. The selected placement will need to find their own housing arrangements.

Requirements

  • Driver's license
  • Personal vehicle is REQUIRED
  • Willingness to work independently and with a team.
  • All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger.
  • Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest or practical experience in Communications, History, Resource & Cultural Management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform housekeeping and preventative maintenance on museum objects and historic structures.
  • Development and utilization of museum handling and cleaning techniques
  • Learning basic museum environmental monitoring tasks such as checking pest traps, recording light levels, and recording temperature and humidity.
  • Make storage and housing containers to support museum objects, label storage units, move objects, line shelves and drawers, rehouse objects and archives into appropriate storage containers, and install dust covers.
  • Aiding in the completion of annual museum inventories
  • Creating and entering museum catalog data into the Museum Collections Management System (MCMS) database
  • Assist management of the park research library
  • Enter library catalog data into the NPS Library Resource Information Service (LIBRIS) database using established National Park Service (NPS) procedures.
  • Draw on and use the museum and archival collections to develop and publish educational social media content
  • Develop, as necessary, temporary museum exhibits.
