About The Position

To perform a wide variety of landscape maintenance functions related to but not limited to leading crews for mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, landscape install, and snow removal (in snow markets). The Crew Leader assists in the performance of various landscaping functions in a leadership capacity, plans, organizes, and manages work for crew members, and ensures proper discipline and rewards. They are responsible for completing daily paperwork, demonstrating ethical behavior, and training employees. The role also involves managing equipment, ensuring preventive maintenance, supervising truck/trailer setup, and maintaining equipment in good operating condition. Safety is paramount, requiring the Crew Leader to ensure proper PPE utilization, follow company policies, and maintain a safe environment. They will also interface with clients, perform quality control, and communicate with the Operations Manager. Training includes plant identification, basic pest control, Smith Defensive Driving, and First Aid/CPR. Category-specific duties include operating various mowing equipment, pruning with ladders and power tools, applying herbicides for bed care, reading and following plans for landscape installation, identifying and caring for annual flowers, applying fertilizers, detecting and repairing irrigation systems, and safely using snow removal equipment.

Requirements

  • Employee must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable state-mandated labor laws.
  • Previous experience as Crew Member.
  • Has satisfactorily completed the prescribed “Crew Member” training guide and can perform those specified essential duties.

  • Full range of mobility in upper and lower body in order to be able to work in various positions including, but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, squatting, and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to reach over head with hands and arms; climb or balance.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to lift, pull, and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Maintain physical fitness level necessary to complete assigned job tasks.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in irrigation (in applicable markets).

Nice To Haves

  • Six (6) to twelve (12) months of previous commercial experience as a crew leader.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all responsibilities required of a crew member.
  • Assist in the performance of various landscaping functions in a leadership capacity.
  • Encourage advancement of crew members after proper training has occurred.
  • Plan, organize and manage work for crew members on job.
  • Properly discipline and reward crewmembers.
  • Develop and maintain motivated and effective crews.
  • Complete daily paperwork as required by each job.
  • Demonstrate role model behaviors on ethics and integrity as well as positively promoting Mainscape’s Standard of Excellence.
  • Organize, supervise, lead, and train employees to complete assigned projects within established guidelines and timeframe.
  • Manage time on Mainscape-issued phone using payroll application.
  • Ensure all preventive maintenance for all assigned equipment.
  • Supervise truck/trailer setup daily and manage equipment and supplies for landscape maintenance projects.
  • Oversee all equipment has proper safety devices installed, operational and not modified.
  • Ensure all equipment is used per manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain equipment in good operating condition.
  • Operate light/heavy equipment effectively and according to all regulation.
  • Report any problems with job site or equipment immediately.
  • Complete 360 inspection and truck walk around.
  • Ensure proper task-specific PPE is being properly utilized and maintained at all times by crew members.
  • Follow all company policies & procedures, including safety guidelines/standards.
  • Ensure a safe environment for other workers and vendors, clients and for all employees.
  • Assist in completing accident reports when incidents occur.
  • Interface with client when needed; Establish relationship with customers.
  • Perform quality control.
  • Demonstrate ability to recognize and report irrigation deficiencies.
  • Communicate with Operations Manager regarding status of assigned job sites.
  • Identify 50 most frequently used plants by common names and demonstrate knowledge of the cultural requirements of those plants.
  • Participate in training program for basic pest control procedures.
  • Complete Smith Defensive Driving Course.
  • Complete First Aid and CPR Course.
  • Operate Push mowers, Walk behind with Velke, Zero turn riding mowers, String trimmers, Blowers, Edger’s.
  • Properly set up/ dispersal of crew members on job site.
  • Perform crew layout for mowing.
  • Drive truck & trailer for mowing.
  • Perform trash/debris pick up.
  • Use Ladders, Gas powered hedge trimmers, Loppers / hand pruners, Chain saws for pruning.
  • Recognize plants that need special pruning needs/times.
  • Perform crew layout for pruning.

  • Properly apply pre-emergent, selective and non-selective herbicides.
  • Identify desirable plants from weeds in a specific area.
  • Pull and spray weeds.
  • Mix chemicals.

  • Fulfill all regular and advanced installation/construction duties including project layout and complete required paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Identify annual flowers.
  • Water and fertilize annual plants.
  • Check annual plants for insects/diseases.
  • Perform loading and fill procedures for annual flowers.
  • Install annual flowers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the proper procedure for emergency spill cleanup (in applicable markets).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic elements of fertilizers (in applicable markets).
  • Train field staff in the application of chemicals (in applicable markets).
  • Detect and make necessary repairs to the irrigation system (in applicable markets).
  • Accurately read various gauges related to the irrigation system (in applicable markets).
  • Manage assigned projects practicing effective and efficient water management (in applicable markets).
  • Interpret job specifications and blueprints (in applicable markets).
  • Install sprinkler systems (in applicable markets).
  • Provide estimates and maintain positive client relations (in applicable markets).
  • Operate pumps, suction and other equipment (in applicable markets).
  • Manage assigned projects practicing effective water management techniques (in applicable markets).
  • Recognize drainage deficiencies and problem soils (in applicable markets).
  • Thoroughly know proper PPE for cleaning.
  • Safely use cleaning supplies and solvents.
  • Work in residential and commercial areas for cleaning.
  • Safely use snow removal equipment, including plow truck, skid steer, loader, backhoe, etc. (in applicable markets).
  • Know safe driving techniques in snow and ice conditions (in applicable markets).
  • Know appropriate clothing for the weather conditions that he/she will be exposed to for long periods of time (in applicable markets).
  • Shovel snow, lifting 25 lbs. (in applicable markets).
