About The Position

To perform a wide variety of landscape maintenance functions related to but not limited to mowing, trimming, irrigation, edging, pruning landscape install, and snow removal (in snow markets). This role involves working in various landscaping settings, including direct contact with plants and materials, and exposure to dust, noise, and weather conditions. The crew member will communicate with lead personnel, learn installation techniques, operate various landscape equipment, and adhere to safety and appearance standards.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable state-mandated labor laws
  • Knowledge of Mainscape Standards of Excellence
  • Ability to comprehend instructions
  • Ability to use assigned tools and equipment in proper/safe manner
  • Ability to become proficient in the use of basic maintenance hand tools: leaf rake, broom, hoe, shovel, cultivator, water hose, quick coupler key, hand pruners, hedge shears and refuse tote
  • Ability to become proficient in the use of basic power equipment used for landscape maintenance: hedge trimmers, line trimmers, 21" lawn mower, and leaf blower
  • Ability to learn and perform basic planting skills
  • Ability to assist in keeping the job site tidy/safe
  • Ability to become proficient in loading and unloading of truck and trailer used in landscape maintenance operations
  • Ability to perform regular safety inspections on vehicle and trailer
  • Ability to adhere to company policies, standards and safety guidelines
  • Ability to work with other employees as a team
  • Ability to meet or exceed company production rates and standards set forth
  • Ability to communicate w/ lead people regarding progress of tasks

Nice To Haves

  • Driver’s license preferred
  • 1-year experience in landscape industry preferred
  • Steel toed boots recommended (mandatory on customer sites where required and when required by job task)
  • Pesticide License, preferred (Fertilization)

Responsibilities

  • Work in and around various landscaping settings including direct contact with various plant and landscaping materials and exposure to various dust, noise, and weather conditions
  • Communicate with lead people progress of tasks
  • Learn aspects of installation work and assist where needed or assigned
  • Learn and perform basic planting skills
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and vines to encourage healthy growth
  • Identify by common names 25 frequently used plants that appear on the CLT plant list (bedding flowers, ground cover, shrubs, perennials, trees, and turf)
  • Guy wiring of trees
  • Identify, by common name, 5 frequently seen weeds in planting beds
  • Recognize plant material in stress or in a problem state
  • Identify by common name 5 frequently seen garden pests
  • Differentiate weed grasses from desirable turf grasses in lawn areas
  • Understand and complete basic irrigation repairs including sprinkler head replacement, sprinkler head arc and radius adjustment, and lateral line repairs
  • Perform Smith Driving (if in driving capacity for Mainscape)
  • Operate landscape maintenance and construction hand tools and light equipment with skill to satisfactorily perform duties
  • Report equipment in need of repair
  • Identify broken, poorly running, and misused equipment, and fill out appropriate repair tag
  • Understand and practice safety in all work circumstances
  • Wear appropriate PPE at all times
  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times
  • Wear Mainscape uniforms while at work (hats, shirt, pants and jackets)
  • Operate Push mowers

  • Ensure proper set up / dispersal of crew members on job site

  • Recognize plants that need special pruning needs/times
  • Properly apply pre-emergent, selective and non-selective herbicides
  • Identify desirable plants from weeds in a specific area
  • Perform pulling and spraying of weeds
  • Perform mixing of chemicals
  • Safely lift / move heavy items during landscape installation
  • Install plants properly
  • Apply granular fertilizers after proper training under supervision
  • Possess thorough knowledge of plant varieties and cultivars
  • Ensure appropriate set up of crew on job site for landscape installation
  • Possess knowledge of proper sequence of landscape installation
  • Identify Annual Flowers
  • Perform watering and fertilization of plants
  • Check plants for insects/diseases
  • Perform loading and fill procedures
  • Perform installation tasks
  • Be proficient at using and calibrating the Z-cart (for fertilization)
  • Apply herbicides, fungicide and insecticide (for fertilization)
  • Replace irrigation heads / nozzles
  • Dig and clear drain/irrigation trenches
  • Work with solvents and glues for irrigation
  • Track irrigation wires
  • Perform problem solving for irrigation issues
  • Properly use trenching equipment
  • Possess thorough knowledge of proper PPE for cleaning
  • Safely use cleaning supplies and solvents
  • Work in residential and commercial areas for cleaning
  • Safely use snow removal equipment
  • Possess knowledge of safe driving techniques in snow and ice conditions
  • Possess knowledge of appropriate clothing for the weather conditions for long periods of time
  • Shovel snow, lifting 25#’s
