About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! The Correctional Training Instructor is responsible for delivering and instructing basic training for NC DAC certified staff. The position supports Prisons Correctional Officers and Probation/Parole Officers in accordance with NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards, and may instruct across classifications, regions, or divisions based on agency needs. The Office of Staff Development and Training (OSDT) is the cornerstone of training for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction workforce. Our team of 101 instructors and support personnel delivers basic training to correction and probation/parole officers, as well as specialized classes, such as firearms, leadership, and instructor training. With our expertise, we manage the delivery of annual in-service training for over 16,000 certified employees. The OSDT team is committed to addressing the specialized training needs of all staff, from top management officials to first-line employees. With over 500 job classifications requiring mandated training, our comprehensive training program is designed to meet the needs of the agency.

Requirements

  • Possession of current General Instructor Certification
  • Certification in Firearms and/or Controls, Restraints, Defensive Techniques (CRDT) specialty certification with the condition of attaining the remaining specialties within 6 months of the start date
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of directly related instruction and training experience in the subject matter specialty; OR Graduation from high school and five years of experience; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have current required certification with the ability to maintain any and all certifications required by OSDT, NCDAC, and by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, organizing, and instructing blocks of training for COBT, Correctional Officer, Probation/Parole Officer, and/or Instructor Training for NCDAC
  • Drafting course plans and objectives, evaluating, updating, and creating lesson plans and training materials
  • Delivering instruction and collaborating as part of an instructional team, following approved training materials and methodologies
  • Researching materials for course development, developing courses strategies and objectives, modifying course content, and participating in evaluation of courses.
