About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Working closely with and reporting directly to the Correctional Captain II and/or Correctional Associate Warden, this position is responsible for providing supervision of subordinate staff, conducting shift line-ups, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.

Requirements

  • Supervisory skills in a prison facility
  • Knowledge of facility operations
  • Knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures
  • Report writing skills
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant Or Two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting investigations and performing searches of persons, places, and objects.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Making security inspections of the facility and grounds.
  • Monitoring posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Performing rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas, and using fire-fighting equipment to include fire hoses, extinguishers, and breathing apparatus.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
