About The Position

Prep Cook provides the children with nutritionally balanced meals and snacks, while maintaining a clean environment in the kitchen, pantry and classroom areas. Perform cooking duties and lead food preparation for children within the childcare setting to include planning, ordering, shopping, and preparing meals for children. Meets all requirements and reporting to the USDA CACFP Food Program for reimbursement for meals served. Why Join the Y? What You’ll Do: Following monthly menus prepared by the SOUTH SHORE YMCA - State Street Early Learning Center and approved by the State. Preparing food in an appealing, efficient and inviting manner. Maintain a high sanitation standard in all food preparation areas, pantry, kitchen, and classrooms. This includes the stove, freezers and refrigerators. Proper labeling and storage of all food products in the pantry, freezer and refrigerator. Inspects food being prepared to ensure proper quantity, quality, and handling; cooks, prepares, and handles food. Leads and participates in the storage and utilization of leftover ingredients and products; rotate stock.

Requirements

  • Ability to inventory and maintain necessary supplies and goods for assigned meals.
  • May be asked to assist and/or supervise children in a classroom if teacher is needed outside of the classroom.
  • Knowledge of: practices, methods and procedures of large-scale food preparation; food values and nutrition; personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions; care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment; record keeping; report preparation.
  • The ability to develop positive, effective working relationships with, staff, children & families, volunteers, school administrators, members, community leaders and other agencies are critical to this position.
  • High School diploma is required.
  • Experience working with children
  • Must meet EEC Educator Professional Development requirements per QRIS standards and the Early Learning Center’s goals.
  • Professional Development must include at least one third of required trainings that address diverse learners.
  • PQ Registry must remain current and reflect all PD hours, trainings and college level courses
  • Willingness and ability to be part of the ELC educator team and attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a higher degree or in the process of completing a higher degree from an accredited college or university in Early Education, or related field is preferred.
