About The Position

The Controls Technical Trainer is responsible for delivering standardized global training programs and developing hands-on and classroom-based modules focused on automation systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and robotics. This role ensures engineers and technical staff have the knowledge and skills necessary to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot automation systems safely and effectively. The Controls Technical Trainer will evaluate competency levels, design tailored learning experiences and maintain up-to-date training materials aligned with evolving technologies and industry standards.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation, or related, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of experience with automation systems, with prior experience training and developing technical staff.
  • Travel: 30 – 60% travel, domestically and internationally
  • Skills & Abilities Proven experience training and developing technical staff.
  • Strong familiarity with the commissioning process, troubleshooting methods, control system integration, and OSHA standards.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for both hands-on and classroom training.
  • Ability to assess technical competency and adapt training content accordingly.
  • Proficiency in creating and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Ability to stand and walk around industrial and/or warehouse environment for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Ability to operate computers, tablets, phones, and other electronic devices.
  • Visual and auditory abilities to work safely with and around moving and/or motorized equipment, machinery, parts, and electricity that require safety protocols
  • Ability to move and use muscles for extended periods of time without fatigue.
  • Ability to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Ability to communicate regularly with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to job site temperature fluctuations due to seasonal weather in geographic region.
  • This position requires work at TGW customer sites.
  • TGW’s customers may require background checks before accessing their sites. Refusal to participate in a customer-required background check may result in a customer barring access and a subsequent reduction in work.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver global training programs and design technical training modules for automation systems (PLCs, SCADA, robotics).
  • Assess engineers’ technical knowledge, identify skill gaps, and maintain a comprehensive skills matrix for commissioning engineers.
  • Conduct new hire training to prepare employees for project site assignments.
  • Maintain and update training documentation to reflect technological advancements and internal standards.
  • Provide real-time troubleshooting guidance and practical demonstrations during training sessions.
  • Collaborate with automation engineers, project leads, and maintenance teams to ensure training aligns with operational needs.
  • Instruct on safe operation and lockout/tagout procedures in compliance with OSHA and other applicable standards.
  • Coordinate third-party certification training (e.g., scissor lift, boom lift).
  • Collect feedback, analyze test results, and track performance metrics to measure training effectiveness.
  • Expand technical knowledge across departments by training personnel on multiple systems and platforms.
  • Stay current with emerging automation technologies to keep training programs relevant and competitive.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
