About The Position

The Controllers major responsibility is the performance of financial, budgetary and organizational duties to support the mission of CHA. Under the direction of the CFO the Controller will monitor all areas of accounting for the organization, which include cash, grants, investments, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, fixed assets, audits, financial reporting, & budgeting.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance Preferred. Experience can substitute for post-secondary education on a year-for-year basis.
  • 5-7 years progressive accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit setting. 1-2 years of supervisory experience
  • Basic understanding of adolescent development and behaviors; demonstrate enjoyment of and ability to relate to at-risk youth and demonstrates empathy with the joys and pains of others.
  • Strong ability to relate effectively with staff, youth, and community agencies.
  • Is approachable, builds rapport well and practices attentive and active listening.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, family dynamics, crisis intervention.
  • Ability to learn and navigate multiple databases including Microsoft Office suite;
  • Ability to work with people of varied cultural backgrounds and tolerate differences in behavior.

  • Ability to work independently, using good judgment, and common sense.
  • Able to make good decisions consistently based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment.

  • Proficient with standard computer operating systems; specifically Excel & other Spreadsheet programs.
  • Excellent oral and written skills including organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledgeable about integrated financial software’s & Lawson
  • Outstanding communication skills for working with front-line staff, management, and board members, plus vendors, community donors and others.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed.
  • Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License.
  • Have a clean driving record.
  • Pass federal, state, and local background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission, philosophy, history and tradition(s) and the underlying values upon which the Agency is founded to the staff, youth and the community we serve
  • Understand and integrate the Five Principles of the Covenant House Philosophy
  • Understand and comply with all Agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical standards.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly & annual agency financial reports
  • Analyze budget variances and present budget to actual reports every month
  • Reviews all general ledger activity to ensure accuracy of accounting transactions
  • Document policies & procedures that ensure efficient closing processes
  • Implement Internal Controls appropriate for the agency size and staffing levels
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget & reforecast
  • Takes lead role in completing annual internal and external audits.
  • Oversee grant reporting and provide necessary supporting documentation and justifications.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all agency components
  • Supervise accounting staff
  • Ability to work independently, using good judgment, and common sense
  • Keep supervisor fully informed at all times
