About The Position

The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, including the preparation of financial reports, maintaining an accurate system of accounting records, implementing the systems and infrastructure needed to support EDC financial objectives, and administering a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, ensure accuracy of the organization's financial reporting, and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This position requires professional level accounting work in the areas of accounting, auditing financial transactions and financial contract administration, reporting and invoicing; examines, analyzes, maintains, reconciles and verifies complex financial records; prepares mandated state, federal and county financial reports. Primary responsibilities require the ongoing monitoring/reviewing of timely invoices for disbursement of grant/contract funds. This position will have responsibility for aspects of the internal budgets as well as funder budgets, support the month-end close process, and is the primary supervisor to personnel who report and provide invoicing responsibilities for multiple departments, subsidy payments and A/P. Requirements

  • First and foremost, the applicant must profoundly share EDC’s mission and vision of social justice and be able to manage stressful situations with empathy and calm.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or 4-5 years full cycle non-profit fund accounting experience.
  • 2 to 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Thorough understanding of GAAP requirements.
  • Analytical and detail oriented yet able to look at the whole picture to meet deadlines
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple priorities and function independently and as a team member.
  • High degree of discretion and excellent judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills, both written and verbal and strict adherence to confidentiality.
  • Understanding of concepts, principles and practices of funding agency relations and compliance requirements as well as donor expectations regarding gift stewardship.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, QuickBooks, databases, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Grant Accounting experience preferred
  • 2 to 3 years of budget cycle for non-profit or government entity preferred
  • 2 to 3 years of payroll and/or cost account experience a plus
  • Project accounting experience a plus

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the accounting staff.
  • Directly supervise, mentor, coach and provide leadership to the accounting team.
  • Implement, document, and maintain adequate and effective internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with required regulations, financial standards, and donor requirements.
  • Fully understand financial processes and implement changes, as needed, to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Implement and maintain accounting software. Ensure staff is trained on the use of the software.
  • Coordinate, organize, and oversee all monthly and fiscal year-end closing activities.
  • Monitor and manage external grants, cooperative agreements, and other funding mechanisms to ensure EDC complies with the terms and conditions of grants, agreements, and federal government uniform guidance as required.
  • Prepare internal monthly financial statements, variance analysis, ad-hoc financial reports, and reports needed for board meetings.
  • Coordinate, plan, and work with auditors in conducting grant audits and annual audits of the company.
  • Prepare IRS Form 990, in conjunction with an external tax accountant.
  • Manage cash balances, and cash flows and assist with cash flow forecasting.
  • Maintain current accounting policies and procedures manual.
  • Supervise investment accounting and be the point of contact with the back office of the external investment advisor.
  • Monitor grant revenue recognition including proper deferred revenue and receivable balances.
  • Manage payroll function, assuring accurate, timely payments, compliance with all regulations, and appropriate accounting.
  • Monitor monthly financial reporting.
  • Provide direction and assistance to other workstreams and offices regarding accounting policies and procedures.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues and serve as liaison to workstream teams.
  • Assist the Finance Director with reviewing and approving financial reports to donors and reconciling them to the general ledger before submission.
  • Actively support the Finance Director in the annual operating budget process and appropriate related analysis throughout the year.
  • Actively support the Finance Director with the periodic forecasting process and subsequent reporting to the board of trustees.
  • Assist the Finance Director with projects as necessary.
