Controller

About The Position

Osmo is a digital olfaction company, on a mission to give computers a sense of smell to improve the health and wellbeing of human life. Why? Our sense of smell both enriches and saves lives, and has a deep and direct connection to our emotions and memory. Olfactory Intelligence has applications across industries including fragrance, manufacturing, security, medicine, and more. We believe in the power of automation and thoughtfully applied AI/ML to solve problems beyond the reach of human intuition alone. Osmo is headquartered in New York, NY, with a new facility in New Jersey, and offices in Somerville, MA. Osmo is seeking a Controller to own and scale our accounting function as we grow. This role is perfect for someone who loves building from scratch, tightening processes, and bringing order to complexity—while also thinking ahead about how finance can better support the business. You’ll report directly to the CFO and be a key partner in modernizing our financial operations, automating workflows, and setting us up to scale. Over time, this role has a clear path toward more strategic finance and analytical leadership as the company grows.

Requirements

  • 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in startups or high-growth environments
  • Deep understanding of GAAP and hands-on ownership of close and reporting
  • Experience with modern accounting systems and a strong bias toward automation and efficiency
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, imperfect data, and building structure where none exists
  • Strong communicator who can work effectively across teams
  • A “roll-up-your-sleeves” mindset with an eye toward what comes next

Responsibilities

  • Run the monthly, quarterly, and annual close—accurate, on time, and audit-ready
  • Prepare and review GAAP-compliant financial statements
  • Manage the general ledger, revenue recognition, accruals, payroll accounting, and reconciliations
  • Oversee AP, AR, and cash management
  • Lead audits, tax filings, and compliance with outside firms and advisors
  • Build and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls that scale
  • Design and implement scalable accounting workflows from the ground up
  • Identify manual, messy, or brittle processes—and fix them with automation and better systems
  • Own and evolve the accounting tech stack (ERP, billing, payroll, expenses, etc.)
  • Partner cross-functionally to streamline how data flows from the business into the books
  • Partner closely with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning inputs
  • Provide clear, practical analysis to help leadership understand performance, margins, and unit economics
  • Support strategic initiatives like fundraising, new revenue models, system implementations, and audits
  • Help lay the groundwork for a growing finance team and a more strategic finance function over time
