About The Position

The Controller reports to the VP of Finance and is responsible for executing and overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial controls, and risk management activities, working closely with the VP to ensure alignment with company goals. This role ensures accurate financial data, consistent processes, and effective internal controls to support business growth. The Controller partners closely with the VP of Finance on reporting, cash management, and key initiatives to ensure alignment between day-to-day execution and strategic objectives. The role also drives continuous improvement across systems, policies, and procedures to enhance efficiency and scalability as the company grows.

Requirements

  • Hands-on leader with the ability to manage detail while driving process improvement.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills, with proven ability to collaborate across functions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required
  • CPA required
  • 7+ years of hands-on, progressive accounting experience, including leadership of accounting operations, preferably in a mid-sized distribution or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, GAAP, and accounting best practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong working knowledge of ERP systems (Sage preferred)
  • Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting tools

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily accounting operations, including AP, AR, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Oversee the month-end and year-end close processes, reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Ensure accurate, complete, and timely financial reporting.
  • Maintain and enhance standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions for accounting processes.
  • Collaborate with IT and operations to leverage ERP capabilities and streamline processes.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, and approval workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal procedures.
  • Support ongoing reviews of system-based access, controls, approvals, and permissions to align with best practices.
  • Coordinate external audit and prepare supporting documentation.
  • Partner with tax advisors to ensure timely and accurate filings.
  • Support lender reporting requirements and covenant compliance.
  • Oversee cash disbursements, collections, and bank reconciliations.
  • Monitor working capital drivers (AP, AR, inventory) and identify opportunities for efficiency gains.
  • Partner with sales and operations to optimize inventory levels, support project-based inventory planning, and implement strategies to effectively manage existing inventory.
  • Supervise and develop the accounting team, providing coaching and professional growth opportunities.
  • Support a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Finance on department goals and finance initiatives.
