About The Position

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Controller will be accountable for oversight of all corporate and project finance, accounting, and financial reporting activities. As the leader of the Finance and Accounting team, the Controller is involved in supporting presentations to the Board of Finance Committee and works closely with executive and senior leadership. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations for an organization with a budget of approximately $35M and lead a team of five to six staff members, with two direct reports. Finance operations include functional responsibility over project accounting and financial reporting and analysis, as well as corporate accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, corporate insurance, annual audit, budget, and treasury. The Controller will ensure that MCD has the systems and procedures in place to support effective project implementation and have successful audits. They will partner closely with project leaders and their staff, not only to train them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can better support project operations.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field is required.
Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in a nonprofit environment, with a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and GAAP.
Experience leading and running operationally effective teams that have multiple functional areas, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of USG Rules and Regulations, including FAR (especially Subpart 31.7) and 2CFR200, including Appendix IV (Indirect Costs) of 2CFR200.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in preparing and submitting/negotiating NICRAs to the USG.
Nonprofit experience is required, with a strong preference for someone who has operated in a fast-growing environment that has limited budgets and resources.
Demonstrated experience leading financial management and accounting, coordinating audit activities, and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
Demonstrated track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.
Technologically savvy with advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners.
Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.

Nice To Haves

A CPA or similar certification is strongly preferred, and an MBA is also strongly preferred
Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and QuickBooks is a plus.

Responsibilities

Manages all finance operations, including accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.
Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards, and FASB standards unique to nonprofits (e.g., ASC 958) and regulatory requirements, as well as individual donor requirements.
Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and project budgets and actual expenditures.
Develops, implements, and ensures compliance with industry best practice and government regulations.
Develops departmental policies, procedures and protocols, and ensures continuous quality improvement.
Incorporates diverse perspectives in developing, implementing and evaluating policies and services.
Prepares and presents accurate financial reports to senior leadership and the Board, ensuring timely communication of financial status and trends.
Consistently analyzes financial data and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual corporate and project financial statements; and monitors progress and changes and keeps senior leadership and project management abreast of MCD’s corporate and project financial statuses.
Supports the COO in engaging the Board’s Audit and Finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
Leads the annual budgeting process, comparing actual results to financial plans, and identifying variances for corrective action.
Develops the overarching annual budget planning process and timeline.
Assists MCD’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process.
Administers and reviews all financial plans and compares to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
Presents the final draft budget to the board and committee for approval.
Conducts risk assessments and identifies controls in place to mitigate identified risks.
Coordinates and leads all audit activities and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls.
Primary point of contact with the auditors.
In collaboration with relevant parties at MCD, reviews the annual renewal of corporate insurance policies, making sure the organization has appropriate coverages.
Once reviewed and approved by the COO and CEO, binds the policies with the insurance broker.
Supervises finance staff, providing guidance and support to enhance their skills and performance.
Partners with the COO and the rest of the management team to ensure that the focus remains on the organization’s mission while maintaining the culture that makes MCD unique.
Provides timely constructive feedback and formal assessment of performance of direct reports.
Works closely with project leaders to train them in finance and accounting procedures, ensuring alignment with project operations.
Oversees all financial, project, and grants accounting functions.
Ensures that expenditures are consistently aligned with project budgets throughout the grant/fund period; and collates financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
Uses Blackbaud NXT for accurate financial tracking, reporting, and reconciliation of government, corporate, and foundation grants.
Leverages Blackbaud NXT to maintain transparency, improve financial oversight, and ensure compliance with funder-specific requirements.
Continuously collaborates to assess the financial efficacy of project operations and establishes finance and accounting systems to support project operations.
Trains project staff as needed (e.g., in financial reporting, expense reports, and time sheets).
Prepares, submits, and negotiates (when necessary) the annual NICRA proposal in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Corporate Finance and Accounting.
Manages organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the Corporate Senior Manager of Finance and Accounting and the project directors.
Acts as the primary liaison with banking institutions to manage and resolve day-to-day operational issues.
Manages and tracks the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
In collaboration with leadership, transfers assets within the portfolio to MCD bank accounts as requested.
Oversees the investment account(s) of the organization.
Accountable for recruitment of direct and indirect reports.
Leverages strengths of the current finance team members, helps to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develops and implements training to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
Creates and promotes a positive and supportive work environment.
Delegates activities to maximize departmental performance.
