About The Position

The Controller is a key member of the Southern California Mountains Foundation’s leadership team and is responsible for the overall management of accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, HR/payroll administration, internal controls, and compliance. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information and supports strategic decision-making for the organization’s mission. The Controller leads a four-person team, fosters a culture of accountability and service, and ensures that financial and HR processes align with nonprofit best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 5-8+ years of progressive accounting experience in a nonprofit setting preferred, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP for nonprofits and HR/payroll compliance.
  • Experience with accounting and payroll systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Paycom, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with financial and non-financial staff.
  • High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to the organization’s mission.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, cash management, and grant accounting
  • Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards.
  • Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and provide financial insights to leadership and program managers.
  • Coordinate annual audit and Form 990 preparation; serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
  • Manage HR/payroll processes, ensuring accurate and compliant payroll cycles, employee records, and benefits administration.
  • Oversee administration of benefits programs, leave tracking, and employee onboarding/offboarding.
  • Support compliance with federal and state labor laws, nonprofit employment regulations, and organizational personnel policies.
  • Partner with leadership on HR initiatives, including compensation reviews, performance management cycles, and staff training needs.
  • Ensure sensitive HR data is handled with strict confidentiality and secure recordkeeping practices.
  • Supervise a team of four professionals across accounting and HR/payroll functions.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, regular performance feedback, and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Establish clear priorities, workflows, and deadlines to support smooth and accurate team operations.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-aligned team culture.
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes; collaborate with program leaders to track grant budgets and restricted funds.
  • Provide financial analysis to inform organizational strategy, program planning, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Assist leadership with scenario modeling, cash flow planning, and long-term financial sustainability planning
  • Serve as a strategic financial advisor to leadership and the Board Finance Committee.
  • Support technology and systems improvements to enhance financial efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, HR regulations, and internal policies.
  • Oversee insurance renewals, contract review processes, and risk mitigation practices.
  • Maintain accurate records for all restricted funds and grant reporting requirements.
