Our client is looking for a Controller to join their team in the Medford, MA area. This is an on-site opportunity. The Controller will manage the finance department providing information, primarily financial in nature, about all company activities that will assist management and other users in making educated financial decisions about the company’s future. Role Summary (Non-Technical): This role is for an experienced accounting leader who can bring structure, organization, and clarity to a growing manufacturing business. The person will oversee a small team and ensure that the company’s financial operations run smoothly day to day, while also helping leadership make better business decisions. They need to be calm, methodical, and able to operate in a fast-moving environment without treating everything like a fire drill. This person will not just “report the numbers,” but actively work with operations and leadership to improve performance, control costs, and impact results in real time. A big part of the role is understanding how money flows through the business—especially inventory and cost tracking—and making sure systems and processes are accurate, efficient, and scalable. They will identify problems, find root causes, and work cross-functionally (including with IT) to fix and improve processes. This person must be hands-on, able to work independently, and also lead and mentor a team of about 7 people. Strong communication and people leadership skills are critical, as they will collaborate closely with other department leaders. Key Focus Areas: Inventory and cost accounting (must-have) Preparing and owning financial statements Improving processes (AP/AR, transaction flow, systems) Partnering with operations to drive business performance Leading, mentoring, and motivating a team What They’ll Tackle in the First 90 Days: Evaluate and improve transaction flows (AP/AR and overall processes) Identify gaps and root causes in current systems Partner with IT to fix inefficiencies Begin implementing a new inventory system (target: late summer / early fall) Ensure the business is making real-time decisions that impact the current month, not just reporting after the fact Ideal Background: BS in Accounting (CPA is a plus) 7–10+ years of experience Experience in manufacturing environments Experience managing accountants (not just clerical staff) Background in mid-size companies ($50M–$100M+ revenue) Strong cost accounting expertise Not a Fit: Pure finance backgrounds Banking, insurance, non-profits, or education Cost is a must Managing performance, making on the fly decisions. Needs to be working within the month to make sure we impact the current month before it hands with operations management and not just keeping score. You have to know cost accounting.
