About The Position

As a member of the team, the Controller reports directly to and supports the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on all system wide financial activities including audits, operational and capital budgeting process, tax accounting, financial analysis of operations and comparisons to external benchmarks, and the analysis of cash flow for planning. This position is a key partner in addition to the CFO between The Aleut Corporation (Aleut) operating subsidiaries to ensure accurate and transparent financial reporting. The Controller needs to be self-directed, adaptable, and successfully operate under pressure using time management skills. Under the direction of the CFO the Controller will oversee all the accurate recordings of all receipts and expenditures and the preparation of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. The Controller is responsible for budget management, financial analysis, forecasting, and financial reporting. The Controller is responsible for supervising and directing the accounting department to ensure there is consistency in procedures, practices, and that internal audits have been established to minimize risk and ensure standard accounting practices are adhered to.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of US GAAP and how the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statements are compiled and relate to each other.
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting software applications.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Knowledge of federal and state tax laws, regulations, and practices.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Must have strong analytical skills in order to review, evaluate, and make sound business decisions as to both conceptual and specific ideas and programs.
  • Must have strong communication and leadership skills in order to foster a team approach and to execute business plans with leadership.
  • Must be willing to “get into the trenches”.
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality and can protect sensitive and proprietary information.
  • Ability to drive and coordinate efforts required across other team members to accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with leadership and engage in strategic conversations relating to the financial health of the corporation.
  • Ability to reason quickly, take calculated risks, and think out-of-the-box, taking into consideration ramifications of actions being taken.
  • Ability to have energy and enthusiasm to tackle multiple issues/projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Seven (7) years accounting experience in a relevant setting with increasing responsibility.
  • Three (3) years’ supervisory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant in the State of Alaska.
  • Experience working within an Alaska Native Corporation.

Responsibilities

  • Champion Aleut Values: accountability, transparency, and rigor.
  • Responsible for working with the Aleut CFO and other executives in developing, implementing, and monitoring the strategic and financial plans.
  • Responsible for the financial reporting process, which includes preparing the monthly financial statements, projected cash flows, depreciation, and fixed asset schedules.
  • Assist the CFO with annual operating budgets and quarterly financial re-forecasts.
  • Track and analyze cost activities, forecasting and budgeting to inform leadership.
  • Responsible for accounting processes including overseeing the month/quarterly-end financial close of the Aleut corporate office and the corporate-wide consolidation.
  • Develop and maintain an accounting manual documenting the G/L accounts, internal controls, accounting policies and operating procedures to minimize risk and ensure accurate reporting of the company’s financial results and safeguarding of the company’s assets and resources.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Ensure consistency of data and the consistent use of that data in the one finance system and process.
  • Responsible for all statistical reporting to the various departments.
  • Assist the CFO in directing the preparation of fiscally sound budgets and long-range financial plans for Aleut parent company, and the consolidated Aleut system.
  • Manage the reconciliation of Aleut’s consolidated and consolidating schedules with the subsidiary financial statements.
  • Responsible for performing analytic analyses and reporting the financial results and other comparative business metrics.
  • Responsible for issuing shareholder dividend distributions and elder benefits per Aleut Board of Directors directive.
  • Supervise the Accounting department which has direct responsibility for payroll, accounts payable, billing, accounts receivable and collections.
  • Lead initiatives to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiencies of the accounting/finance department.
  • Direct and oversee implementation of large programs and projects.
  • Assist the CFO in the management and oversight of the investment activities, including reconciling internal and external reports.
  • Work closely with external auditors and the CFO in coordinating the audit process for the entire system, including monitoring the timing and audit progress to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Manage tax reporting and monitoring, which includes federal and state taxes. Including working closely with the CFO on directing Aleut’s tax accounting activity with external tax consultants and ensures that all tax reporting is performed accurately and timely.
