About The Position

Senior Accountant Rancho Community Church & School Title: Controller / Senior Accountant Supervisor: COO/CEO Classification: Exempt - (5 days a week in office) Description: The Controller/Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing all daily accounting operations and financial reporting for Rancho Community Church & School. Provides day-to-day operational support under the direction of the COO and collaborates directly with the CEO on special projects, economic strategy, banking activities, and annual budget planning. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial records in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit regulations, and internal policies. Reporting directly to the COO, this position provides financial leadership, strategic insight, and operational oversight while supervising accounting staff and supporting the organization’s mission.

Requirements

  • Degree in Finance or Accounting required
  • Several years of experience in accounting or a related financial position.
  • Possess strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting. Possess strong computer skills. Proficient with Microsoft Excel and accounting software.

Responsibilities

  • Develop accounting processes and procedures that create efficiencies in the organization.
  • Oversee the accounting staff related to all accounting functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, balance sheet, and financial statement preparation.
  • Work with the CEO to implement efficient accounting policies and procedures.
  • Manage daily banking relationships.
  • Manage monthly close activities, including scheduling, preparation, review, and posting of journal entries, accruals, amortizations, allocation, and reconciliations across multiple entities.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and supervise all cash activity, including bank transfers, wires, loans, mortgages, and credit facilities, ensuring proper approvals and documentation.
  • Review bi-weekly payroll and record all related journal entries, including wages, taxes, benefits, retirement plans, workers' compensation, and payroll clearing accounts.
  • Prepare and maintain intercompany transactions, including to/due-from entries, management fees, benefit allocations, and payroll cost sharing between entities.
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reports, including the month-end schedule and leadership or board-level reporting.
  • Manage company purchasing accounts and vendor programs, including approval of organization-wide orders.
  • Assist with annual CPA audits, payroll audits, workers’ compensation audits and reporting, along with compliance requirements.
  • Respond to accounting inquiries, provide cross-functional support, and serve as backup to other accounting roles as needed.
  • Perform full-cycle accounting for two related entities, including intercompany transactions and cash transfers.
  • Manage IRS compliance matters related to discrimination and tax-exempt requirements, including documentation, reporting, and communication as necessary.
  • Maintain and reference tax filings to support audits, financial analysis, and regulatory reporting.
  • Review and post Payroll JE’s, fees, WC on housing, 403b, and Simple IRA entries.
  • Prepare and coordinate annual IRS Form 990 and 990-N filings for applicable entities.
  • Review and post month-end accrual and allocation entries
  • Guide and direct recording of specific entries in compliance with GAAP
  • Balance sheet reconciliations – (do or supervise)
  • Reconcile 941’s to Payroll
  • Reconcile or review month-end RE, balance sheet accounts, etc
  • Bad debt entries, make or direct
  • Financial reporting – monthly, quarterly, etc. (Baker Tilly/Helena)
  • Financial analysis
  • File quarterly sales tax returns
  • File annual environmental returns
  • File property tax changes and exemptions annually or as necessary
  • FA- allocations – review and approve
  • Review and post depreciation & depreciation allocation JE’s
  • Assist in managing banking relationships

  • Manage and review month-end and year-end close processes, journal entries, allocations, and reconciliations.
  • Review and approve bank and balance sheets
  • Lead the development, monitoring, and forecasting of annual budgets.
  • Provide Variance analysis and financial projections to leadership
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, tax laws, and internal policies
  • Oversee cash receipts, weekly giving reports, annual giving statements, and donor reporting.
  • Manage FACTS payment plans, journal entries, and system configurations.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot accounting systems, including Blackbaud, FACTS, Shelby, and related platforms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of organizational needs.
