About The Position

Under the oversight of the Construction Supervisor -Worland or Plant Supervisor-Forsyth , the Construction Technician-I performs entry-level labor and project work. The role requires basic knowledge of fiber optic , copper , and ariel cabl ing , and operations of industrial equipment ( vibratory plow, trencher, digging equipment and industrial pneumatic bore). Work tasks are laborious and require the use of hand tools (shovels, drills, hammers, etc.) . In support of the Technician- II and Leads, this role a ssists with plac ement and remov al of cable , performs s plices, and maintains or repairs cable s in accordance with construction plans and work orders. Requires use and wear of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) . F requent travel for construction projects is a requirement for success in this position .

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a grade-12 high school diploma program, equivalent GED type of secondary education certificate / diploma.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of successful work experience performing construction work, and operating mechanical/pneumatic equipment.
  • A valid, state - issued, and insurable drivers’ license.
  • Information Technology Related Knowledge: Fundamental working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to apply in varied situations.
  • Analytical Skills: A basic-to- intermediate capability and skill with observing and assessing a situation and determining how to respond in a prompt and professional manner. Applies highly proficient and specialized skills that allow employee (s) to function in situations that are varied, complex, and/or non-routine . Must be able to see patterns and trends and draw conclusions from observations across various situations .
  • P roject Management Skills: At a basic level, contribute and support the organizing and planning process . Develop and assist with project schedul ing including tasks, accountabilit y , and deadlines. Anticipate problems that may impede work . Communicate s with changes and progress.
  • Computer / Technical Skills: At a basic level , operate a word process or and data entry tools efficiently . Operate and program test equipment.
  • Administrative / General Equipment Operation: Efficiently use common office equipment (computer, digital camera, scanner, fax machine, copier, phone , calculator, GPS systems and cable locator ) .
  • Confidentiality: Daily, maintain company / customer / vendor information and sensitive business matters private when facing a wide range of circumstances. Be knowledgeable of who are the authorized key contacts for disclosure of and to communicate with regarding restricted information.
  • Time Management: Requires the ability to use one's work time effectively and productively,
  • Customer Relations : Provide a high level of professional customer relations . This includes customer needs assessment , meeting quality standards, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Office/Administrative Support: Maintains and updates calendar(s) as appropriate . Schedules meetings with stakeholders to discuss and plan for jobs . Keep s organized files of current and previous jobs, receipts, and enter s data into Excel files.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in a support role and p lac e direct buried cabl ing (fiber, copper) into the ground/earth.
  • Perform earthwork labor with various hand tools and industry related equipment ( vibratory plow , trencher, digging equipment, industrial pneumatic bor e) .
  • Perform maintenance of buried cable , performing test s and repair s (removals, replacement, and splicing) .
  • Restore all disturbed surfaces including concrete and pavement surfaces to acceptable condition s .
  • As assigned, operates (when supervised) various heavy equipment, as needed (plows, backhoes , trailer, etc. ) .
  • Mounts demarcation devices and protectors at customer premises.
  • Assists with the maintenance of construction equipment, trailers, and vehicles .
  • Performs related construction tasks as .
  • Assists with i nstall ation and remova l of a erial cable and pole lines .
  • Assists with i nspect ion , replace ment , or repair of aerial cable and poles.
  • Select and attach appropriate hardware , install, or reinstall in accordance with project work order.
  • Work with copper and fiber optic cables in accordance with construction plans and drawings (new construction) .
  • Assist with preventative maintenance o n project worksite(s) cable s .
  • P erform cable tests to troubleshoot issues and identify defective components or sections .
  • Repair or remove and replac e defective cable section or related component (s) .
  • Remove obsolete cable as appropriate .
  • Mount demarcation devices and system protectors at assigned project work locations ( customer ’s property, field work site, company’s facility).
  • Assist with Data Center frames, tip cables and fiber distribution frames and cables , as necessary .
  • Operate daily , a computer system and software programs which include, but are not limited to performing documentation of time entries, expense reports, material usage documentation, review credit card statements , and process fiber testing reports (from test meters ).
  • Other computer programs operated daily , including mapping software , MS Teams, and Virtual training (webinars, videos).
  • Maintain and organize department files related to current / completed jobs, and receipts.
  • Perform data entry into Excel, denoting cable footages, reel numbers, and other materials used.
  • Schedule meetings with customers, contractors, and other utilities to go over plans for jobs.
