About The Position

The RN Lactation Consultant is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. Utilizing the nursing process, the RN Lactation Consultant employs technology, therapeutic interventions, and evidence-based practices, and coordinates care with other team members. Additionally, the RN Lactation Consultant provides breastfeeding education, consultation, and counseling to support new mothers. PRN 0-40 hours as needed, no benefit package. This is a remote position for Connect Care Lactation. The shifts vary (scheduled on a quarterly basis for the following quarter) The shifts are all on-call shifts (3 hour blocks) either in the morning or the evening 365 days/year. Essential Functions Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates breastfeeding management for patients in inpatient and outpatient settings by utilizing the nursing process. Provides holistic, evidence-based breastfeeding support and care from preconception to weaning for women and their families. Acts as an advocate for breastfeeding as the child-feeding norm. Provides support for patients, proactively suggests strategies for breastfeeding, and addresses patient issues and concerns. Conducts prenatal breastfeeding classes and evaluates educational outcomes. Delivers appropriate education for patients and their support/family. Provides outpatient care, consultation, and home visits for families experiencing breastfeeding difficulties. Acts as a clinical expert/resource for staff on subjects related to lactation, including the current standards of practice. Facilitates the development of policies that protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. Participates in the development of educational programs and assesses the educational needs of healthcare providers.

Requirements

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in state of practice.
  • Valid compact licenses must be transferred to the state of practice within 60 days of the start of employment.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) Certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree will be verified).
  • Registered Nurses (RNs) hired or promoted into this role must obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within four (4) years of their hire or promotion date. If there is an existing education agreement, that agreement will take precedence.
  • Certification by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) within Two (2) years of hire.

  • BSN from an accredited institution (degree verification required)
  • Strongly prefer: International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification
  • Two (2) years of recent experience in maternal/child nursing
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required as of the job description's last update on 4/27/2025. Employees hired or promoted prior to this date will be held to the minimum requirements that were in place at the time of their promotion or hire.
