This is a 3rd shift (6:45pm - 7:00am) position operating on a rotating night schedule (2 nights on, 2 nights off, 3 nights on, 2 nights off, 2 nights on, and 3 nights off). This position is onsite based out of our Johnston, IA office and  What we’re looking for: SHAZAM is looking for a Computer Operator to join our team. In this position, you'll be responsible for operating and monitoring computer systems to ensure optimal performance and accuracy. This role oversees system consoles, online terminals, and monitoring tools to verify that all data inputs, file exchanges, and scheduled jobs run correctly and on time. The operator will review console messages, identify potential issues, and take appropriate corrective action or escalate when necessary.

Requirements

  • At least one year of computer experience is preferred.
  • Can effectively identify and respond to hardware and software operational issues.
  • Skilled in interpreting system outputs, written materials, and training content to support Operations Department improvements.
  • Demonstrates precision in computer data entry and can maintain paperwork, system access, and retrieval tasks for extended periods.
  • Capable of standing for 30 minutes or more while preparing system backup tape files for transport to off-site storage.
  • Proficient in understanding complex technical instructions—both written and verbal—and providing thoughtful analysis and customer-focused recommendations.
  • Communicates clearly by phone, in person, and through written correspondence with customers, support staff, and colleagues.
  • Able to move computers, printers, and similar equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Performs well under deadline pressure within a fast‑paced, evolving work environment.
  • Thinks independently, demonstrates self‑direction, solves problems effectively, and makes sound decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the operation of several computer systems by means of on-line terminals or multiple system display consoles.
  • Monitor systems performance, identify potential system malfunctions and initiate corrective action to ensure the integrity of the production files, outputs, and system availability.
  • Seek to minimize system downtime for our customers by resolving or notifying them about problems in a timely manner.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of computer operating procedures and operating standards and provides any necessary training to other operations staff.
  • Recognize and recommend improvements to Computer Operations Manager on any potential problem areas.
  • Responds to any peripheral equipment requests or needs to ensure accurate and effective job stream flow and schedule maintenance.
  • Maintain production schedules on computer systems and initiate corrective actions in the maintenance of these schedules.
  • Maintain awareness of the status of all circuits and data communications equipment and assist Data Communications staff in testing circuits and equipment and acting on problems, following problem escalation procedures.
  • Monitor on-line systems and take appropriate action when problems occur at ITS, DPCs, foreign switches, or terminals.
  • Handle and maintain all data in a secure and confidential manner.
