About The Position

With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for a Full-Time Compost Program Coordinator in the United Community Centers Division for the East New York Farms program. The Compost Program Coordinator will be responsible for facilitating all aspects of East New York Farms compost program. The ideal candidate will be committed to expanding compost education and programming throughout East New York. The candidate will connect with local organizations, gardeners, and stakeholders/community members to conduct outreach and distribute educational information and supplies connected to compost programming.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years experience in urban agriculture, youth development, and/or community building.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds).
  • Comfortable working outside in all weather and capable of lifting 40 pounds.
  • Drivers License required.
  • Familiar and proficient with G-Suite (Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, Gmail) and computer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the ENYF compost site by processing food scraps, evaluating the health of active piles, curing, sifting, and distributing finished compost, and maintaining the compost space.
  • Facilitate the compost project by collecting food scraps from various collection stations on a weekly basis via e-bike and trailer and conducting outreach for the project.
  • Coordinate interns, visitors, and volunteer groups to support compost operations and provide education on ENYF and compost programming.
  • Train and supervise youth interns assigned to support the program area.
  • Coordinate and run clean soil and compost distributions for backyard / household gardeners.
  • Provide support to local community partners through technical assistance and supply distributions.
  • Identify and maintain connections with the appropriate stakeholders and keep relevant records of all contacts.
  • Refer community gardeners to deliveries of clean soil and compost through partnership with DSNY and the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation.
  • Facilitate partnerships with other compost-oriented organizations across the city by coordinating work days, site visits, and collaborative efforts and events.
  • Track inventory, data, and other supervise other personnel as assigned.
  • Support the farm manager in maintaining the half-acre farm and overall program operations.
  • Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
