About The Position

Responsible for assisting in selection and training of qualified school bus drivers according to federal, state, and district guidelines and requirements. Provide on-going training and performance evaluation for all driver employees. Assist management in administration of the site's entire safety program, including industrial safety. Maintain the highest level of customer care with district administrators, fellow staff members, and community members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
  • Current Region 10 Certification
  • Must have safe driving record
  • Must be 20 years of age or older
  • Completion of Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Training Academy or TAPT Train the Trainer certification for school bus driver instructors within 60 days of employment or the first available regional class
  • Complete (or have completion of) 3rd Party Testing through TxDPS
  • Ability to use personal computer and software to develop trainer schedules, spreadsheets and databases and do word processing
  • Ability to read and understand documents including policies and procedures manuals
  • Ability to receive and give written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to pass U.S. D.O.T. alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
  • Effective organizational and oral and written communication skills
  • Effective presentation and leadership skills
  • Knowledgeable in adult training techniques
  • Possession of mechanical aptitude
  • Knowledge of and a commitment to customer care principles
  • Three years of experience working in a transportation department, preferably for a school district as a certified school bus driver

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a 12-month plan of schedules that include training sufficient number of drivers, coaches, and/or teachers to sustain full employment, training, orientation, and safety programs.
  • Implement additional training, such as but not limited to, first aid and CPR.
  • Assist in emergency operations planning (as needed).
  • Emphasize in training the driver's role and impact on children's educational performance.
  • Refresh and broaden the driving skills of existing employees who operate district owned\leased vehicles by emphasizing through training their role and impact on children's educational performance.
  • Provide proper training for trainers and periodically review their performance, training packets are being utilized, and training schedule is followed.
  • Set up new drivers in Transfinder as needed.
  • Facilitate timely and orderly communication to the training team.
  • Document and maintain all training records as required by State and Federal regulations and district policies. Maintain files to document the progress of each trainee and all in-service training for bus drivers in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Provide notification to drivers of upcoming expiration dates of various required employment documents (physicals, driver licenses, school bus certificates) and follow-up to ensure their renewal.
  • Track and ensure that all driver certifications are completed according to all Federal, State, and local requirements, including but not limited to DPS driver certifications, Department of Transportation physicals, and commercial driver license requirements
  • Maintain good public relations with students, district personnel, and community members.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with staff members and the public through all forms of communication.
  • Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations, adhere to the district's safety policies and procedures, and confidentiality in the conduct of district business.
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance.
  • As part of the Incident Accident Review Panel, maintain minutes of each meeting, review and discuss panel recommendations with the Transportation Director and Supervisor of Operations. Initiate driver retraining according to district guidelines.
  • Perform a driver proficiency evaluation on each driver (including road evaluation) at least once during the school year. Initiate necessary retraining, if needed.
  • Investigate complaints relative to safety issues and take corrective action to remedy concerns.
  • Model behavior in word and action that parallels the district's commitment to compliance with policies and/or processes.
  • Conduct responsibilities in accordance with customer care principles.
  • Serve as substitute bus driver as needed (must be available for morning and afternoon routes).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
