The role can be based in any of the firm’s offices and reports to the firm’s Senior Director of Strategic Intelligence. Job Summary (basic description) The Competitive Intelligence Manager is a member of the firm’s Marketing and Business Development (MBD) team and is responsible for providing company, industry and competitor research and analysis in support of client targeting, RFP response and pitch development, key account programs, as well as firm, office, practice, and industry group planning. The Competitive Intelligence Manager will be responsible for synthesizing firm and competitor data and information and perform analyses to unearth trends, challenges, and opportunities. This role requires advanced analytical judgment and intellectual curiosity. The Competitive Intelligence Manager is expected not only to gather and synthesize information, but to develop hypotheses, build analytical models, estimate unknowns, and derive strategic insights from incomplete or imperfect data. This role demands comfort with ambiguity, frequent context-switching across industries and practices, and the ability to translate complex analysis into clear strategic guidance.

Requirements

  • Proven analytical abilities to review information and to evaluate its reliability, completeness, relevance, and importance to a project.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify patterns in information and develop related implications and recommendations.
  • Strong quantitative skills to understand and analyze financial and economic data.
  • Ability to learn quickly and connect research and analysis with opportunities for the firm’s practice.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills, including the ability to ask the right questions to focus deliverables and to present/respond to questions from all levels within the firm.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Laser-like focus on detail; a client-service, can-do attitude.
  • Extensive knowledge of external research sources and databases.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant professional service or law firm experience.
  • A college degree is required, preferably in an area that emphasizes quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Develop analytical frameworks and quantitative or qualitative models to estimate market size, competitor activity, client spend, growth trajectories, or strategic positioning when direct data is unavailable.
  • Test hypotheses and challenge surface-level conclusions by integrating disparate data sources and applying structured analytical thinking.
  • Move beyond descriptive reporting to identify implications, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions for firm leadership.
  • Synthesize findings into clear strategic narratives that explain not just what is happening, but why it matters and what to do next.
  • Translate complex analyses into clear, concise, and compelling insights tailored to senior firm leadership, attorneys, and business development teams.
  • Defend assumptions, methodologies, and conclusions, and iterate analysis based on stakeholder feedback and strategic needs.
  • Demonstrate strong intellectual curiosity and a willingness to explore new analytical approaches, data sources, and methodologies.
  • Undertake in-depth competitor analyses at the practice, industry and local geographic market level using SWOT and other analytical comparison methods.
  • Support key account and client feedback programs with relevant research and analysis, as needed.
  • Undertake other competitive intelligence/analysis projects as requested by the CMO and the Marketing and Business Development senior leadership team.
  • Make written and in-person presentations of research and intelligence findings to firm decision makers and engage with them for follow-up and to further refine the analysis presented.
  • Liaise with other business services units in the firm including Finance and Information Services to maximize information and knowledge sharing across units.
