About The Position

The Compensation Specialist is the linchpin for maintaining payroll accuracy and regulatory compliance across Samaritan’s multi-entity, union-negotiated, and non-union workforce of more than 2,600 employees, including Clifton Fine Hospital. Acting as a strategic partner to accounting, human resources, accounts payable, and department managers, this role ensures each timecard is executed flawlessly and in accordance with federal, state, and collective bargaining agreement requirements. The specialist’s meticulous attention to detail, proactive problem-solving, and deep understanding of labor regulations directly safeguards employee trust while supporting the organization’s fiscal integrity and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • A.S. in Human Resources, Accounting, or a related field; or 2+ years of payroll experience.
  • Understanding of FLSA, FMLA, State and Federal labor laws and regulations.
  • 2+ yrs experience with Workday, Kronos, or similar HCM/time collection software.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office with a strong focus on Excel (LOOKUP, pivot, SumIF, etc).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate intricate pay and policy details into plain language.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support and training for employees, timekeepers and managers.
  • Audit bi-weekly timecards to ensure compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreements, State & Federal labor laws and regulations, and Samaritan policies.
  • Resolve payroll discrepancies in Workday within 48 hours of notice.
  • Review Time-Off entries to ensure compliance with New York State Paid Sick Leave.
  • Ensure retirement deferrals, garnishments, and FLSA overtime pay are timely and compliant.
  • Process employee reimbursement requests with full documentation trail and a review of appropriateness.
  • Ensures that all reimbursements are compliant with IRS income regulations and Samaritan policies.
  • Prepare and post accurate general-ledger entries related to wages, taxes, and benefit liabilities; support month-end close processes.
  • Year-end: Support W-2 balancing, Workers’ Comp audits, Pension audits and other accounting functions as needed.
