About The Position

Implement and monitor academic standards and excellence for Tribal children tutor students in specific area of need, plan activities and document educational progress. Work with Tribal children on a daily basis both in school and after school to achieve academic success. Be a collaborator, communicator, and positive working colleague who provides strength based support and approaches to team members, children, youth and families. The incumbent is expected to work in accordance with the mission, purpose, and values of the Colusa Indian Community Council.

Requirements

  • Education: High school degree or equivalent
  • Completion of core course work from an accredited college or university in Education, Liberal Studies, Child Development, or closely related field preferred
  • Additional related education or training may be substituted for the required one year of experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Experience: Entry level tutors should have demonstrated expertise in the subjects they will be tutoring
  • Minimum of one-year experience in working with youth and/or families is necessary, paraprofessional experience a plus.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current certificate in CPR/First aid and health/safety requirements
  • Must maintain compliance with Licensing and clear criminal clearance and child abuse index.
  • Must be fingerprinted and on file with licensing agency pre-employment.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, positive attitude and have the ability to cooperate with others. A great deal of time will be spent interacting with students, parents, school personnel, and other staff involved with the students
  • Knowledge of California academic standards
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Willingness to work with a team of staff and departments to meet the needs of the Tribal community.

  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment & able to multi-task. Flexibility and ability to assist others when needed

  • Must enjoy working with diverse groups of people.
  • Must be able to stand; walk and stand on an intermittent or continual basis
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25-50 pounds.

  • Experience in the development, implementation and coordination of programming would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • In and after school tutoring with tribal member students. Which may require: the ability to work with children who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, using general education curriculum, or modify to meet the child’s individual needs
  • ability to communicate with teachers and parents to support the educational progress of the students
  • act as a mentor and educational advocate to assist in the students’ progress
  • monitor grade reports for every student
  • Assist director with overall success of the after school program; monitor the progress of the students
  • Assist in overseeing and developing curriculum used during Summer Education Session
  • Act as a mentor and educational advocate to assist in the students’ progress and measure level of success of implemented supports
  • Plan and implement activities that encourage educational achievement
  • Develop opportunities to support student and family engagement in school and in the community
  • Assess, assist and encourage students in the learning process
  • Explain problem-solving methods in an easy-to-understand way
  • Assist with the Academic Incentive Program; make sure documents are turned in following the program guidelines
  • Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
  • Provide encouragement and positive motivation
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
  • Transport students to/from tutoring program and/or Department activities
  • Prepping and light cooking of snacks/meals as needed for the program
  • Process POs as needed for Department
  • Assist with planning, organizing, facilitating and supervising youth activities; including but not limited to all activities planned within programs of the Community Services Department
  • Follow organizational health and safety standards for cleaning and sanitizing
  • Act as a liaison between the Tribal community and educational agencies on behalf of Indian students and parents
  • Advocate for students and parents with individual teachers, schools and educational agencies.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, participants and parents
  • Provide support to parents in addressing issues hindering their children’s educational success, including areas of Special Education and individuals with disabilities; have knowledge of Special Education timelines in California
  • Educate parents as to their rights, as well as the rights of the students
  • Develop and initiate ongoing parental orientation and support
  • Provide emotional and behavioral support to youth and families
  • Attend SST meetings, 504 meetings, and IEP meetings alongside the parent; follow-up to ensure students are getting proper support
  • Plan and assist large scale community events for Tribal families
  • Develop and maintain student and confidential records
  • Proofread/edit documents for the department
  • Assist with member’s travel and entertainment plans; assist with contract labor contracts
  • Research and seek grant opportunities and sponsorships that align with the Community Services Departments goals; Assist in time tracking for grant reimbursements
  • Collaborate with county organizations for assistance programs for Tribal families
  • Coordinate/Oversee the Youth Enrichment Program; ensure program compliance with current grants
  • Monitor the Tribal food pantry: Maintain a clean, stocked, organized and accessible pantry, ensure equipment is adequately maintained and functioning
  • Coordinate food orders, deliveries and distribution; Inspect donated items to ensure items are properly sealed and dated
  • Understand and apply food-related topics such as culturally appropriate foods, diet-related diseases and nutrition education
  • Check inventory weekly, track wasted products, and request replacements
  • Methods and procedures of safe handling and storage of food
  • Delegate appropriate tasks to other staff member’s (flyers, mailing lists, printing recipes, etc.)
  • May perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position.
