About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Shift Sergeant or Deputies, this position will perform duties in support of the Sheriff's Office operations. This position will assist with routine, non-hazardous law enforcement duties for which a Deputy is not required. Community Service Specialists do not independently respond to in-progress crimes, past situations where there is a suspect, or volatile situations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic law enforcement practices, methods, laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of NCIC/CCIC.
  • Knowledge of radio communication and law enforcement computer, radio and communications systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations, policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office.
  • Considerable knowledge of all applicable accreditation standards.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate a County vehicle, as qualified, in normal and adverse conditions.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper courses of action to be taken.
  • Ability to use photographic equipment and evidence collection materials.
  • Ability to operate related office and field equipment.
  • Ability to successfully complete in-service/mandatory trainings.
  • • Ability to read and understand applicable Federal, State and local laws.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Sheriff's Office personnel, internal/external vendors, other law enforcement officials and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written English.
  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma/G.E.D. or equivalent.
  • EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of general public contact experience.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that satisfies the requirements of the job as approved by the Sheriff.
  • CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES: None.
  • Must possess CPR and First Aid certification within the initial status period.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Drives an agency vehicle and watches for suspicious behaviors, disabled vehicles, hazards, vandalism, or traffic accidents; respond to requests for assistance or information from the public.
  • Takes phone calls concerning civil and criminal issues, furnishes information to the public and authorized law enforcement personnel.
  • Assists motorists and advises the public of parking regulations and parking violation procedures; reports irregular circumstances to law enforcement staff.
  • Conducts special studies and projects at the direction of Sheriff's Office Staff.
  • Prepares unknown suspect Offense and/or Incident reports on any person coming to the Agency to speak with an officer; interviews victims and witnesses; completes the appropriate reports.
  • Prepares unknown suspect Offense and/or Incident reports via telephone as outlined in Sheriff's Office polices.
  • Enters and retrieves confidential law enforcement information using various law enforcement databases and systems.
  • Examines crime scenes to discover, preserve, photograph and collect physical evidence to include, having contact with the deceased and the deceased’s family.
  • Assists at scenes with evidence collection, entry into the INFORM RMS system, processing and storage of evidence as outlined in policy.
  • Assists with crime scene control; receives and identifies evidence and lost/found property; maintains proper control and chain of custody; disposes of evidence and found property as directed.
  • Handles abandoned vehicle calls, tagging them with a warning and coordinating a tow if necessary.
  • Processes recovered stolen vehicles, to include obtaining evidence from the vehicle prior to being released to an owner or tow company. This often includes obtaining DNA from the primary driver.
  • Collects and tabulates data associated with departmental operations; enters and retrieves computerized data.
  • Handles animal control and cleanup after hours.
  • Performs clerical duties, to include typing and filing.
  • Completes reports and documents a wide variety of information on activities involving job duties.
  • Assists Deputies with traffic accidents by setting up flares, taking statements, and other support functions; coordinates vehicle towing; provides traffic control at accidents and special events or situations. This includes maintaining a road closure, as needed, for serious accidents or events in an area that needs to stay clear of unnecessary traffic.
  • Assists law enforcement personnel with a variety of duties and special projects such as field investigations, observations, or critical incidents when necessary.
  • Provides public education by issuing warnings for a wide variety of code, regulation, and ordinance violations.
  • May appear in court as a witness/complainant to provide testimony.
  • Operates computers and standard office equipment, including commonly used computer software programs.
  • Maintains regular and acceptable attendance at such level as determined at the Sheriff's Office discretion.
  • Is available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as the Sheriff's Office determines is necessary or desirable to meets its needs.
  • Is available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the Sheriff's Office determines are necessary or desirable to meet its needs.
  • Follows and supports the mission, values, organizational philosophies, operational principles, code of conduct, and policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office.
  • Interacts effectively with others and exercises good judgment when dealing with people in sensitive situations.
  • May be assigned other duties as necessary.
