About The Position

This is paraprofessional police work aiding Police Officers and the public in various law enforcement activities. This work involves responding to traffic accidents and other incidents, abandoned vehicles and vandalism. Work is performed under the general direction of the Patrol Supervisor. The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Some experience in public contact work.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License with a good driving record and /or obtain a Florida Driver's License upon hire, if applicable.
  • Must successfully complete all background checks including; oral board interview, polygraph examination, psychological exam, credit check, background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug screening.
  • Must successfully pass the Test of Adult Basic Ability (T.A.B.E.) test from acceptable Criminal Justice Academy and achieve a score of 10.0 on the reading, language, spelling and math portion of the test, within thirty (30) days of application date.
  • Must attain the following certifications upon hire; Police Service Aide Academy, School Crossing Guard certification (DOT standards); First Aid and CPR certification; FCIC/NCIC (limited access) certification.
  • Knowledge of the City's policies, procedures, and practices and the operations of the police department. Knowledge of codes and ordinances to be enforced. Knowledge of accident investigations and traffic enforcement. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize a personal computer and office software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook. Ability to enter and retrieve data accurately using the City's mainframe system or other required application. Ability to work independently and to adhere to established policies and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to manage and prioritize routine, specialized and complex assignments and problems utilizing knowledge acquired through prior education, training, and experience. Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position. The position requires working mandatory shift hours including days, late evenings, holidays, weekends, unscheduled overtime as needed and emergency preparedness situations. Personnel are not subject to call-outs.

  • A comparable combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to and prepare written reports for motor vehicle crashes and delayed crimes.
  • Enforce parking and non-criminal traffic laws. Patrol specified areas.
  • Respond to and address traffic complaints and/or direct traffic as needed.
  • Perform school crossing guard duties.
  • Incorporate community policing philosophies in daily interaction with the community.
  • Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
