About The Position

The City of Carmel is looking for a motivated, community-focused Community Service Officer (CSO) to join our team! This is a high-energy, hands-on role perfect for someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and working directly with the public—while supporting sworn officers and enhancing the quality of life in Carmel. What You’ll Do As a Community Service Officer, you’ll play a vital role in public safety and community support by handling non-criminal calls and enforcement activities that don’t require a sworn officer. Your work will include:

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience working with domestic and/or wild animals (law enforcement experience preferred)
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a firearms qualification course
  • Willingness to obtain required animal control certifications

Responsibilities

  • Responding to animal-related calls, including injured, sick, or stray animals
  • Enforcing animal control, parking, and local ordinance violations
  • Assisting with vehicle lockouts, VIN checks, traffic hazards, and motorist assistance
  • Investigating junk and abandoned vehicles
  • Conducting golf cart inspections for local permits
  • Supporting Code Enforcement and sworn officers with investigations and evidence collection
  • Serving as a Certified Car Seat Technician and Certified Field Evidence Technician
  • Collecting evidence, documenting crime and death scenes, and preparing reports
  • Educating the public and building positive relationships throughout the community
  • Testifying in court or at public hearings when needed
