About The Position

The City of Maple Grove is seeking a full time community service officer. This position delivers excellent customer service, provides general assistance to residents of the community, and performs a variety of duties to provide support to sworn Police Officers in the performance of non-criminal incidents. Work is performed under the supervision of the Community Service Coordinator and will exercise no supervision.  Daily supervision and direction provided from Police Sergeants, Police Captains, and the Chief of Police as necessary based on the assigned shift of the Community Service Officer. Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Record keeping and file maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge of: Principles of report preparation.
  • Knowledge of: Detention operations.
  • Ability to: Interpret and communicate City codes and ordinances to the general public.
  • Ability to: Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to: Operate departmental equipment.
  • Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to: Problem solve and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to: Maintain mental capacity which permits making sound decisions and using good judgement, prioritizing work activities, and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
  • Needs to have: Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Minnesota driver's license.
  • Needs to have: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Needs to have: One year of public contact or customer service experience.
  • Needs to have: Obtain BCA required certification.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned area by vehicle and/or on foot; locates stray animals and captures them and transports to animal containment facility; Responds to and investigates complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required; maintains record of animal complaints and violations. Investigates and follows up on animal welfare checks.
  • Enforces parking ordinances. Follows up and investigate violations.
  • Assists with enforcing zoning ordinances and conducts investigations on violations such as dumping complaints, illegal parking and home businesses.
  • Conducts mail run, city bank deposits and delivers city council packets, city administration and Park Board documents, and others as needed. Assists with delivering bail to the Hennepin County courthouse.
  • Compiles a variety of data regarding animal control; and prepares the necessary reports.
  • Writes routine correspondence and reports such as memos, inquiries, and status activity reports.
  • Provides mutual assistance with other departments during emergency situations.
  • Performs emergency first aid as necessary.
  • Assist with fleet maintenance transportation for service and repairs.
  • Provides support to sworn officers such as vehicle impoundment, responds to motor vehicle crashes, traffic direction and rendering medical aid.
  • Aids motorists by giving directions, unlocking cars, making emergency repairs, and removes road debris as needed.
  • Participates in youth safety programs such as bicycle safety, , registration, Shop-with-a-Cop, National Night Out, Polar Plunge, Maple Grove Days, or others as identified.
  • Conducts finger printing services for background checks and applicants. Conducts tours and presents to the public.
  • Patrols park system by walking, riding bike or driving vehicle.
  • Conducts visual inspection and physical checks of prisoners in accordance with departmental regulations and maintains accurate records of such checks. Prepares and serves meals to pre-hearing offenders that meets the requirements of the State of Minnesota DOC regulations.
  • Observes and monitors the processing and documentation of incoming prehearing offender.
  • Conducts daily Detention Facility inspections and maintains inventory control of jail related property and supplies and orders or causes to be ordered when additional supplies are necessary. Reports any deficiencies for repair of the Detention facility to the Jail Administrator or CSO Coordinator.
  • Assists police officers in releasing of prisoners from custody consistent with departmental policies and procedures. Reviews documentation submitted by the releasing officer to confirm documentation is filled out entirely. Conducts cell inspections for contraband or damage that may have occurred from previous released offender and documents findings.
