The Community Service Officer is a non-sworn classification within the Police Department. Milpitas Police Department provides 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year policing services to the City, keeps the peace, and prevents & controls crime. The Department's nine functions include: Administration, Patrol Services, Traffic Safety Unit, Crossing Guards, Police Community Relations Unit, Investigations Unit, Communications Unit, Records Unit, and Personnel & Training. Located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, Milpitas is a progressive community that is an integral part of Silicon Valley. As a full-service city of 452 full-time employees with water utility, sewer utility, police and fire services, Milpitas serves a diverse population of nearly 80,000. Requirements

  • Completion of high school or equivalent AND one year of experience involving a substantial amount of contact with the general public.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver's License

  • Experience working in a law enforcement agency, in the capacity of Community Service Officer or related role.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely assists patrol teams with non-enforcement duties; completes routine police reports; maintains records of daily work activities.
  • Performs non-hazardous investigative duties related to the commission of crimes against property such as residential, commercial and vehicle burglary, petty theft, grand theft, vehicle theft and vandalism.
  • Issues citations for parking and zoning violations
  • Enforces laws and ordinances as required by the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program
  • Testifies in court when necessary
  • Provides traffic control at fire scenes, crime scenes, signal outages and as assigned
  • Assists in the preparation of special events (i.e., Fourth of July, annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony)
