About The Position

The Office of Commissioner Chakira Johnson, District 4, is seeking a dynamic and community-driven professional to serve as its Community Outreach Coordinator. This role serves as the primary bridge between the District 4 Office and DeKalb County residents, with a deliberate focus on engaging historically underserved communities. The ideal candidate is a skilled relationship-builder who thrives in fast-paced, community-facing environments and brings strong organizational, communication, and strategic thinking skills to their work. In this role, the Coordinator will lead outreach initiatives, support constituent events, manage social media engagement, and provide issue-based guidance to advance the priorities of District 4 residents. The Coordinator plays a critical role in strengthening public trust by delivering timely, responsive service and building meaningful, lasting connections between the Commissioner's Office and the community it serves.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Communications, Political Science, Sociology, Community Development, or a closely related field; 2 years of experience in community outreach, public engagement, constituent services, communications, or a related field.
  • Direct public contact experience with a solution-focused, service-oriented approach
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and supporting community events and public meetings
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Experience with Canva
  • Skilled in social media outreach and community-centered digital storytelling
  • Culturally competent with a demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and community representation
  • Working knowledge of governmental structures and community engagement best practices

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or another language reflective of District 4's diverse communities
  • Familiarity with DeKalb County government, services, and community demographics

Responsibilities

  • Represent District 4 at community meetings, listening sessions, and local events to strengthen visibility and accessibility.
  • Build relationships with diverse racial, ethnic, and immigrant communities, including Hispanic and Asian populations.
  • Support management of the office’s general communications and outreach materials; assist with message development and digital storytelling that reflects District 4 priorities.
  • Create and maintain social media content, engagement strategies, and digital campaigns to share resources, promote events, and elevate community voices.
  • Maintain brand integrity of the Commissioner’s office across all platforms in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Respond to resident inquiries, complaints, and service requests by phone, email, and in person; track issues to resolution through coordination with county departments.
  • Maintain databases, logs, and reports documenting constituent interactions and outcomes.
  • Monitor community needs and recommend responsive and equitable programming for District 4.
  • Serve as a liaison between residents and government services, ensuring timely follow‑up and clear communication.
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies that increase access to county resources and improve engagement with historically underserved populations.
  • Organize and manage logistics for constituent events, civic forums, stakeholder meetings, and special initiatives.
  • Support the formation and coordination of the District 4 Community Advisory Group.
  • Maintain an outreach calendar, attend events, track outcomes, and prepare follow‑up documentation.
  • Draft monthly outreach reports summarizing engagement activities, metrics, and emerging community issues.
  • Prepare briefings, presentations, newsletters, social media updates, and other communications for internal or public use.
  • Conduct research to inform community engagement strategies and make data‑driven recommendations.
  • Provide administrative support, including database management, scheduling, correspondence, and coordination of youth engagement or interagency projects.
