The City of Phoenix Office of Heat Response and Mitigation is charged with establishing and implementing a cohesive strategy to address the growing hazard of urban heat in the nations hottest large city. The office develops plans and programs that include short-term strategies to protect public health during extreme heat events and long-term strategies to create a cooler, safer, and more comfortable city for all. The Office of Heat Response and Mitigation seek a Community Forestry Coordinator to support local and regional efforts to increase tree canopy coverage. The Community Forestry Coordinator will work collaboratively with City staff and community-based organizations on developing and implementing various tree planting programs. They will support new, innovative initiatives that require working outside of the status quo, all under the city's $10M Urban and Community Forestry Grant from the US Forest Service. The City of Phoenix and the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation recognize the inequitable burden of extreme heat on different communities and populations. Phoenix was the first community in the United States to adopt the American Forests Tree Equity Pledge, and a core value of the newly adopted Shade Phoenix Plan is to lead tree and shade efforts with an environmental justice and equity lens to address inequities. The Community Forestry Coordinator must reflect these commitments and values in their day-to-day responsibilities. The position is also responsible for administering federal funding from the US Forest Service and will be expected to comply with all relevant rules and regulations. In this position the selected candidate must be highly motivated, focused on results, and demonstrate sound judgment and independence in problem-solving. The successful candidate will report to the Urban Tree Program Manager in the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation. The temporary position will be hired as a Project Management Assistant in the City of Phoenix job classification and is funded through June 30, 2027. The temporary position will have benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially into the city's retirement program. If the successful candidate is a current City employee, all benefits will still be applicable, and the employee will still contribute to their pension. Temporary positions are not covered under civil service rules, and thus employment is considered "at-will", and employees may be separated at any time.
