About The Position

The University of Nevada, Reno Extension is seeking a part-time Community Based Instructor 2 (CBI 2) to support educational programming and outreach for the Nevada Tribal Programs. This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. This position delivers community-based instruction, volunteer training, and culturally relevant outreach across Nevada’s 21 federally recognized tribes and 28 tribal communities. Programming includes agriculture, natural resources, cultural harvest practices (Hoop House & Gathering), tribal emergency management, and support for 4-H youth development activities. Working under the direction of the Lead Coordinator, this position provides hands-on learning opportunities, collaborates with tribal communities and partner agencies, and helps advance Extension’s mission of community-responsive education. This role requires a strong commitment to relationship-building, cultural respect, and inclusive learning environments. The ideal candidate has knowledge of community-based instruction and informal education methods and demonstrates the ability to work effectively with tribal communities and diverse audiences. They possess strong communication, relationship-building, and cultural competency skills, enabling them to build trust and collaborate successfully with others. The candidate is capable of recruiting, organizing, and supporting volunteers, works well both independently and as part of a team, and has basic computer and record-keeping skills to manage program activities efficiently.

Requirements

  • This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent education and two (2) years of relevant work experience in areas such as agriculture, horticulture, community development, health and nutrition, human and family development, and natural resources in urban and rural areas; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above
  • A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • This position requires candidates to complete a fingerprinting/background check.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver informal education and hands-on instruction in agriculture, natural resources, cultural harvest practices, tribal emergency management, and 4-H youth development.
  • Recruit, train, organize, and support tribal volunteers; coordinate volunteer participation in program activities and camps.
  • Maintain active outreach with tribes, tribal members, and partner agencies; assist with participant recruitment and community engagement.
  • Support program evaluation efforts by collecting data, maintaining records, and compiling reports consistent with grant and University requirements.
  • Assist faculty and staff in implementing educational goals and coordinating partner involvement.
  • Address and document volunteer concerns and tribal feedback related to program operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Nevada Tribal Programs.
