The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Communications Specialist Contractor plays a critical role in strengthening the Division of Ecological Restoration’s (DER) communications and outreach capabilities to communicate the value of DER’s ecological restoration work to partners and stakeholders and to build public support for ecological restoration. This position leads and supports key outreach projects and initiatives, including managing the Division’s social media presence and e-newsletter. The position also provides support for essential communications tasks including responding to time-sensitive communications issues and requests for information, planning and organizing public events, writing and reviewing press releases and reports, and responding to media requests. The position coordinates closely with communications staff in the Department of Fish and Game and its Divisions. This position is a term-limited contract position that's expected to begin in January/February 2026 and continue through August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Draft press releases for DER's restoration projects, grant announcements, and other milestones
  • Manage media interest and media interviews for DER's work, in coordination with DFG. DER has been receiving significant media attention from national news outlets over the last six months, including CBS, the Associated Press, Fox News, and Inside Climate News. The Communications Contractor will coordinate media interviews with media, DER, DFG, and EEA; develop talking points; prepare staff for interviews; participate in interviews; and keep DFG and EEA informed about outcomes
  • Coordinate events such as restoration site tours with legislators and other decision-makers
  • Manage DER's social media presence, including Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, and X, including drafting and posting content
  • Travel to DER's river and wetland restoration sites to photograph and document the restoration work for sharing with DER's stakeholders
  • Draft DER's quarterly Ebb & Flow newsletter and DER Notices newsletter, which provides stakeholders with time-sensitive updates and announcements
  • Make periodic website updates in order to share DER's Requests for Responses and other funding opportunities with the public
  • Support DFG's communications staff in relation to the Governor's Biodiversity Plan, the DFG Strategic Plan, and other Department needs
  • Support DER’s efforts to achieve accessibility goals for digital content
