About The Position

Under the direction of the First Peoples' House Manager, designs, drafts and edits publications and promotional materials, both physical and digital. Obtains and compiles information and ensures its accuracy and completeness. Coordinates the production and distribution of publications and promotional materials. Acts as a resource person. Monitors accounts.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and fostering respectful relationships.
  • Proficiency with digital tools and platforms: Envoke, Canva, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Suite, and social media (TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram).
  • Ability to organize workflows and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Familiarity with marketing, communications, and social media best practices (2–3 years experience preferred).
  • Strong writing and editing skills in English; basic French (spoken and written) is an asset.
  • Extensive professional experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is essential, with lived experience within an Indigenous community, a strong asset.
  • Together, these experiences are vital to understanding the lived realities of Indigenous students and to fostering cultural safety within First Peoples’ House.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous communities within the province of Québec and surrounding regions, including networks, organizations, issues, and opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, drafts and edits publications, communications and promotional materials, both physical and digital.
  • Consults appropriate documentation and persons to obtain and compile information.
  • Ensures its accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify and corrects errors.
  • Coordinates the production and distribution of publications and promotional materials.
  • Prepares schedules.
  • Give instructions to contractors, such as printers and translators, regarding job specifications.
  • Obtains quotations.
  • Curates First Peoples' House website.
  • Oversee First Peoples' House inbox and receive phone calls.
  • Build and execute social media strategy through research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging, and audience identification.
  • Generate, edit, publish and share regular content (ex. original text, images, video or HTML) that builds meaningful connections and encourages students to engage with First Peoples' House events and services.
  • Moderate all user-generated content in line with the moderation guidelines for each platform (ex. Tik Tok, X, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) as well as McGill guidelines.
  • Liaises with others.
  • Acts as a resource person and resolves problems.
  • Maintains and updates records, databases, and mailing lists.
  • Prepares budgets and budget proposals, verifies invoices and monitors expenditures related to communications strategy.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Uses equipment such as a personal computer, fax machine, photocopier, calculator, and other standard office equipment.
  • Collaborate with partners, both internal and external to McGill.
  • Foster a welcoming environment for students.
  • Establish and maintain relationship with Indigenous communities and/or organizations.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
