About The Position

The Communications and Marketing Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the SIS six unique and diverse degree programs on both the Undergraduate and Graduate side to include BA/BS in Integrative Studies, BA in Human Development and Family Science, Bachelor of Individualized Study, BA in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, graduate programs in Higher Education, as well as the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. Support of these programs include communications, marketing, and IT needs, as well as strategic initiatives and campaigns that focus on student retention, engagement, and enrollment in SIS courses. This position collaborates with both the advising team and operations team to plan and execute student and alumni events. This role works with internal and external audiences to raise the profile of outstanding students and faculty while drawing attention to the various academic programs and courses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Typically, 1-2 years of marketing and communications experience
  • Knowledge of general academic operations (including policies and procedures) and Microsoft Office (especially word processing and spreadsheets)
  • General office administration and customer service skills
  • Professional demeanor with strong and effective written and oral communication skills, and ability to interact with high-level professionals
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with individuals from a wide variety of personal and academic backgrounds
  • Ability to collect and disseminate information in multiple formats (digital, print, social media, etc.)
  • Ability to learn how to navigate university systems (for example Banner SCT)

Nice To Haves

  • Typically, 1-2 years of higher education experience
  • Knowledge of public relations, website management, communications and marketing, to include multiple social media platforms
  • Ability to use creative suites such as Canva or Illustrator

Responsibilities

  • Raises the profile of SIS programs, students, faculty, staff, and alumni by producing effective written communication
  • Identifies the SIS marketing and communication needs and external outreach activities on an ongoing basis
  • Creates and manages web content for four independent department websites and ensures current content is up to date
  • Creates and updates printed program-related materials, including for recruitment purposes
  • Prepares and distributes career information, internship opportunities, and event announcements to students
  • Promotes department programs and courses by use of social media and the dissemination of course descriptions with the goal of increasing enrollment
  • Creates student and alumni profiles aimed at a prospective student audience
  • Creates print and digital marketing materials such as newsletters, brochures, and articles, suggesting that content for stories to university media and external audiences
  • Acts as a liaison with University Media Relations, CHSS Communications Director, CHSS Development, and CHSS alumni and university alumni offices
  • Maintains coverage of the front desk and directs students and visitors accordingly
  • Collaborates with the SIS shared student services team and operations team, in coordination with CHSS Undergraduate Academic Affairs, to run targeted campaigns to improve retention and enrollment into our courses and majors
  • Uses available reporting tools to customize targeted campaigns to students, both internal and external to SIS, that increase retention and enrollment
  • Uses communication skills and tools to connect with students in jeopardy of not advancing in their degree plan, identifying students who could benefit from completing a minor, works with other units to transition terminated students into one of our degrees
  • Co-chairs the departmental scholarship committee to ensure information is shared with at risk populations and helps manage the scholarship application cycle from start to finish
  • Ensures information regarding special topic courses, Mason Core courses, internships, and our majors and minors are known to internal and external audiences
  • Facilitates communication between advisors and prospective students
  • Plans, implements, and coordinates special projects and events, and provides administrative support of school initiatives
  • Collaborates with the Operations and Shared Services team to determine event needs and priorities
  • Staffs prospective and current student events such as Orientation and Admission events, Commencement, Welcome Back, Info sessions, and other special events
  • Schedules room and meetings space for such events, using the 25Live system
  • Ensures events and opportunities are communicated to audiences via website, social media, and listservs
  • Serves as principal administrative contact and liaison with all university constituents and external contacts for special events
