About The Position

The Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is seeking a dynamic and creative Marketing and Communications Specialist. This position plays a key role in shaping and executing strategies to promote and communicate the impact of the department’s mission in teaching, research and Extension. This role reports to the Department Chair and collaborates with faculty, staff, and stakeholders to develop engaging narratives that resonate with different types of audiences. This is a fully in-person role, with expectation of regular, on-campus presence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years minimum experience required.
  • Proven experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or related fields
  • Ability to lead communications initiatives and content creation, including website management
  • Experience with social media platforms and digital marketing strategies
  • Must be collaborative and work well in a team-oriented environment with superior verbal and written communications skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or related field.
  • Expertise in writing and editing across multiple styles and media
  • Experience in web content management systems (CMS)

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all departmental digital and print marketing and communications, ensuring content is aligned with the department's mission.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to develop and showcase departmental accomplishments.
  • Write articles, press releases, and promotional materials to highlight key events, research, and department achievements.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive stakeholder communications strategy that strengthens relationships with external audiences, including alumni, industry partners, donors, Extension partners, and university leadership; proactively translate departmental priorities, initiatives, and impacts into clear, compelling, audience-appropriate messaging across channels; support leadership communications needs and ensure consistent, strategic alignment with CFAES and university-wide messaging.
  • Assist with departmental annual reporting, communicating the impact of the department.
  • Develop and implement communication and marketing strategies for student recruitment.
  • Create promotional materials for prospective students, ensuring content highlights the strengths of the department's programs and research, along with student engagement opportunities.
  • Work with faculty and staff to identify key recruitment opportunities and craft messaging to attract prospective students to the department.
  • Lead the development of web content, including storytelling and strategic narrative creation.
  • Manage the department’s website, social media platforms, and newsletters to maintain a consistent digital presence.
  • Analyze web traffic and social media engagement using analytics tools to adjust and optimize communication strategies.
