About The Position

Under the general direction of the Training Department Manager of a campus, the CDL Trainer/Tester performs duties related to delivering the appropriate instructional program as set forth by Lake Sumter State College in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their potential. Requires strong training skills. The position also calls for flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work harmoniously with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as outside clients.Additionally, the Trainer-Tester is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the integrity of the licensing test for prospective CDL holders, in accordance with state and federal regulations. Responsible for demonstrating LSSC's core values of Caring, Communicating, Collaborating, and Celebrating when interacting with students, employees, visitors, and community members.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Current Class A CDL.
  • Minimum of (5) years' experience driving a Class A vehicle; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as mentioned.
  • Currently holds a State of Florida CDL Examiner Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare the classroom and range for class activities.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
  • Use relevant technology to support instruction.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance and development.
  • Provide appropriate feedback on work.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, policies, and school regulations.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom, on the pad, and in the vehicles by enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Maintain daily attendance sheet.
  • Perform specific pastoral duties, including but not limited to student support, counseling students with academic problems, and providing student encouragement.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students and colleagues regarding student progress and student needs.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the subject area.
  • Administer all components of the CDL Licensing testing process in accordance with state and federal regulations, including pre-trip inspection, basic controls, and on-road skills.
  • Verify accuracy and completeness to assess the student's ability to perform to the standards tested.
  • Must adhere to the CDL curriculum and training objectives that the college has adopted for the CDL program.
  • Record and upload test results into the national testing database to ensure students are eligible to receive their CDL.
  • Must be eligible to apply for and maintain the State of Florida Third Party Tester contract.
  • Prepare work facility for daily operations and/or close of business.
  • Inspect vehicles to ensure roadworthiness and safety as per company policies.
  • Must be willing to drive trucks to inspection, fueling, and repair locations as necessary.
  • Operate CDL Vehicles along planned routes (i.e., tractor-trailers, buses, bobtail trucks, etc.)
  • Attend training programs and maintain certifications as required by state and federal regulations.
  • Meet with individuals involved in legal processes to provide information and clarify issues.
  • Direct student activities during instruction and examination, and provide technical guidance as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
  • Current certifications to facilitate sessions for LSSC employees (i.e., personal preference inventories and Situational Leadership).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational development principles and practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Understanding and commitment to the state college mission.
  • Extensive experience developing high-performing work cultures and developing and delivering leadership training programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated technology skills.
  • Background in employee relations, labor relations, job analysis, compensation programs, and performance
  • Considerable knowledge of CDL requirements.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, assemble and organize data, and to prepare reports.
  • Computer applications related to the work.
  • Techniques for effectively representing LSSC, including making effective public presentations and dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
  • Exceptional driving and training skills.
  • Command of the English language.
  • The ability to be flexible and interface professionally with all levels of internal and external customers.
