About The Position

Transportation Driver Trainer Job Title: Driver Trainer Duty Days: 226 Reports to: Director of Transportation Pay Grade: Bus Driver + (.50) Dept/School: Transportation Pay Schedule: Auxiliary Wage/Hour: Non-Exempt Date Revised: 9/2020 Primary Purpose Implement and oversee the student safety program for Waxahachie ISD Transportation Qualifications Education/Certification Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) with passenger and school bus endorsements TAPT Official Certification (preferred) TEEX Train the trainer school bus driver instructor certified or within 90 days of hire Special Knowledge/Skills Effective telephone and communication skills Ability to receive and give verbal instructions effectively Ability to pass alcohol, drug test, and DOT physical Proficient map reading skills Knowledge in the use of Excel, Word and internet Knowledge of student discipline procedure Must possess personal qualities related to respect for the rights and confidentiality of others Experience Experience as certified school bus driver a plus If no experience, must be able to obtain a CDL Major Responsibilities and Duties Essential Functions Coordinate and schedules assignments of bus drivers, bus routes, vehicles, and substitutes for am, midday and pm shifts Dispatch drivers and vehicles and communicate with them using a telephone and two-way radio Notify drivers, parents, and school personnel of any changes in a student’s bus service; (i.e. an address change, change in pick-up and drop-off location, change in time or bus change) Maintain good public relations with students, parents and school personnel Interact with special program administrators and school officials concerning transportation of special education students Process student behavioral/safety referrals the day referral is generated Investigate reports of student safety incidents through conference with students, parents, drivers and campus administrators as necessary Assess reported student safety incidents and take necessary corrective action to include appropriate student discipline, for driver/monitor counseling refer to all to supervisor of drivers/monitors Coordinate school bus driver/monitor safety/evacuation training Support the District and Transportation Department through strong work ethic and punctual attendance All other duties as assigned Records Maintenance Maintain mileage records on all bus routes and travel Maintain log book and record student head count to facilitate writing copying and distribution of change notices to transportation personnel, parents and schools Keep a log book and record all special education two-way radio transmissions Maintain records on all drivers including extracurricular drivers pertaining to physical, driver certification and license check Maintain logs on communication with pertinent personnel regarding confirmations, cancellations, and changes Vehicle Operation Serve as substitute bus driver Student Management Supervisor students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations Safety Fire extinguisher usage training CPR certified Heimlich maneuver training Professional Conduct Demonstrates ability to remain calm and withstand pressures Flexible to changes in routine and adapts quickly to changing situations Reliable and responsible attendance and punctuality Demonstrates respect, courteous to peers and visitors and assist fellow workers willingly Avoid speaking ill of the district and district personnel Other Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office Work irregular hours as needed Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor Supervisory Responsibilities None Equipment Used Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; school bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher Working Conditions Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; school bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares; reflective signs; fire extinguisher. Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; prolonged driving; moderate walking, climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reaching Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds) on a daily basis Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress

Requirements

  • Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) with passenger and school bus endorsements
  • TEEX Train the trainer school bus driver instructor certified or within 90 days of hire
  • Effective telephone and communication skills
  • Ability to receive and give verbal instructions effectively
  • Ability to pass alcohol, drug test, and DOT physical
  • Proficient map reading skills
  • Knowledge in the use of Excel, Word and internet
