About The Position

Performs a variety of duties related to the management and operations of organizational development of the cancer registry and works collaboratively with the leadership to maintain ongoing accreditation with the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Commission on Cancer (CoC) approvals program. The Education and Quality Assurance Manager manages the day-to-day operational aspects of the cancer registry by directing the case finding activities and abstracting for over 3,000 cases annually to ensure high quality, timely and complete registry data. Directs, monitors, interprets, and markets cancer registry data to administrators, Multidisciplinary Care Teams, physicians, and other departments for the purposes of monitoring adherence to national treatment guidelines and measuring patient outcomes. Works collaboratively with a physician member of cancer committee to conduct a study to ensure quality outcomes through validation that cancer treatment planning conforms with evidence based national treatment guidelines. Oversees quality assurance of cancer registry data by conducting monthly audits on work performed by the cancer registrars. Calculates percentage of accuracy and discusses findings with each cancer registrar to ensure understanding of guidelines and directs correction updates within the cancer registry database. Responsible for developing and providing complex education support relating to the collection and reporting of cancer registry data as set forth by Louisiana state law and in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-National Program for Cancer Registries (NPCR), the North American Association of Central Cancer Registry (NAACCR), CoC, and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) standards and practices. Leads, researches, develops, and evaluates cancer registration training and education programs and material, including the formulation of learning objectives and plans. Oversees weekly tumor conference planning, including monitoring and reporting activity to the cancer committee to demonstrate compliance with standard 2.5 Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference Responds, coordinates, and adheres to all requests by set deadline as established by the LTR.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years abstracting experience.
  • Bachelors degree required in a healthcare related field. Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) may substitute for Bachelors degree. (consider adding 2 years experience in addition to CTR to sub for B.S.)
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, abstracting and coding principles, Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR), and CoC guidelines is essential.
  • Thorough understanding of coding and staging guidelines, CoC standards, and LTR requirements.
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) required.

Responsibilities

  • Cancer Registry Activities
  • Serves as Lead for Cancer Registrars by creating and assigning cancer abstracting lists to CTRs for abstracting. Monitors abstracting and case finding status for all OLOLRMC cases; including pending treatment, updates, and concurrent abstracting.
  • Assist in weekly tumor conference planning, monitors and reports activity to the cancer committee to demonstrate compliance with CoC standard 2.5 Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference.
  • Facilitates a review of cases abstracted by the CTR's in accordance with CoC standard 6.1 to assure accuracy of data and consistency in data collection and data entry. Disseminates the results of case review to the CTRs for ongoing education and presents findings to the cancer committee.
  • Prepares and uploads data monthly to the CoC's Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS) and prepares and submits data annually to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB).
  • Maintains updates to the Cancer Registry software system (CNExT) by working with the software vendor and hospital IS department to apply updates needed to maintain current data element collection and to correct problems. Add/remove user defined data fields as needed.
  • Provides cancer registry data to other departments in support of hospital-wide operations.
  • Trains new staff and distributes workload in a manner that ensures efficient departmental operations.
  • Multidisciplinary Care Teams (MDC)
  • Assists the MDC Teams with various tasks and duties such as data collection, analysis and response to data requests from members of the MDCs.
  • Presents registry data to MDC teams to ensure compliance with NCDB Quality Measures.
  • Quality, Performance Improvement and Compliance
  • Works collaboratively with a physician member of cancer committee to implement a study to ensure that evaluation and treatment planning conforms to evidence based national treatment guidelines as stated in CoC standard 7.2.
  • Participates in various quality assurance projects as requested by the CoC and LTR.
  • Participates in monthly NAACCR webinars and other education as required by LTR.
  • Maintains continuing education and CTR certification as required by the ACoS CoC for CTRs.
  • Educates and informs abstracting staff of such quality measures and pertinent data collection per cancer disease site to ensure that cancer registry data continually meet the highest quality standards as set by the CoC, SEER, and LTR.
