About The Position

Conservatory Lab Charter School empowers students to be scholars, artists, and leaders of their own learning. Conservatory Lab is a charter public school located in Dorchester, Massachusetts serving students from all over the City of Boston. EXTENDED LEARNING: Conservatory Lab participates in statewide League Sports with the Massachusetts Charter School Athletic Organization (MCSAO). Sports offerings have included Co-Ed Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball, Track, and Flag Football. There is also a plan to expand developmental sports instruction through clubs for younger students. POSITION SUMMARY: The Sports and Cooperative Play Coach coaches middle school athletic teams during fall, winter, and spring. In addition, the Sports and Cooperative Play Coach works during the school day to support cooperative and and skill building games during recess for elementary and middle school grades. They will be responsible for implementing daily routines during recess, planning collaborative inclusive games, and collaborating with other staff to implement daily activities. In order to align fully with the school culture, they will provide support in other classrooms during non-coaching times. During after school, the Coach will lead skill building and conditioning for middle school league sports and/or facilitate developmental sports and health clubs designed to strengthen students’ sports skills and promote knowledge of nutrition, first aid, physical fitness, and other health topics.

Requirements

  • Experience working with school-aged children (elementary and middle school) either in schools or non-profits.
  • Passion for health and wellness, sports, physical fitness, and youth development.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to engage students across various age groups.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a flexible and adaptive approach.
  • Understanding of child development and best practices in classroom facilitation and management.
  • Ability to encourage student growth through active listening, open-ended questioning, and constructive feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree or teaching certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and create games and structures for recess that promote fair play, leadership, problem solving, good sportsmanship and physical fitness
  • Faciliate both cooperative and competitive games to build an inclusive play environment and inspire healthy play among students
  • Coach middle school students in Soccer, Basketball, and either Flag Football or Track using a strong working knowledge of various youth sports
  • Facilitate developmental sports and health programming as allowed by coaching schedules.
  • Provide individualized guidance to students, fostering good strategies for sportsmanship, knowledge of health and wellness, and social-emotional growth.
  • Maintain strong communication with school staff and families to support student engagement and success.
  • Split time between after-school program facilitation, instructional support, and program support including curriculum development, classroom preparation, and operational tasks.
