About The Position

This position is for a co-op student in the Summer term. Length of internship is approximately four months from May 2026 through August 2026. This is a full time (40 hours per week) position based out of the Raleigh office. Job responsibilities include assisting with traffic engineering assignments such as plan development, traffic data analysis, field inventory, quantity calculations, and cost estimating. Basic Functions/ Responsibility: Work on projects throughout the mid-Atlantic region including field data collection, work zone traffic control, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), signing, pavement markings, and developing creative solutions to complex projects. Responsible for assisting in the development of Work Zone Traffic Control Plans following NCDOT and MUTCD practices and procedures. Will participate in field data collection including inventory of existing signs, signals, and signal/ITS communications along project sections within the Raliegh, NC area. Responsible for performing quantity take-offs and cost estimates for Work Zone Traffic Control Designs. Assist with the design of intelligent transportation systems including splicing details and cable routing plans. Assist with the design of traffic signals including controller programming and signal layout plans.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in traffic engineering
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Classwork in traffic engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE)
  • Applicable prior intern (Co-Op) experience
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or GIS
  • Exposure to traffic related software (HCS, Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM)
