About The Position

Apply your classroom-learned skills to a program supporting the defense of our country. GDMS has an immediate opening for an Engineering Intern to join our team. The position provides an opportunity to work on projects that support some of our nations fundamental defense services. GDMS employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions. GDMS is seeking a qualified candidate to participate in the design, development, and manufacture of complex Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) for commercial and military use. The full-time Mechanical Engineering Co-op should have experience in mechanical design and engineering analysis to support the development of mechanical components, assemblies, and systems used in AUVs manufactured by GDMS. The successful candidate will assist in the development of detailed designs from concept through final production. The selected candidate will work with collaborative teams on various technical projects associated with our core mission. Requirements

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks software for model and drawing creation.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a product development team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a thorough understanding of engineering technology.
  • Engineering Interns must be enrolled in an accredited degree program in Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other related scientific or technical discipline with a preference for a standing of a sophomore or higher.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Design to Cost metrics and techniques is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Providing system, vehicle, and component level mechanical design and engineering, to support the varied needs of GDMSs diverse client base.
  • Working alongside Systems, Electrical, and Operational Engineers to develop AUVs.
  • Working collaboratively with Manufacturing staff, throughout the entire product development process. Tasks include assembly and test fixture design.
  • Participating in design reviews and peer reviews.
  • Integrating Commercial off the shelf (COTS) components into custom vehicle designs.
  • Generating design documentation and test procedures.
  • Creating drawings from which parts can be efficiently manufactured.
  • Participating in assessments of incoming parts and products.
  • Participating in releasing products via Engineering Change Notices.
