This position involves assisting in performing a variety of nursing care services for patients within the Respiratory Care Unit. Key responsibilities include receiving patient care assignments from the registered nurse (RN) in charge and initiating delegated tasks based on demonstrated competence for specific patient age groups. The role requires collecting and documenting patient data for admission assessments and reassessments, as well as providing appropriate data to the licensed nurse for analysis of patient responses to care and significant changes in condition. Effective communication, including charting and relaying information to team members and the licensed nurse regarding patient conditions, complaints, or educational needs, is essential. The CNA will answer patient calls, take vital signs, monitor patient behavior and physical condition, and assist with daily living activities such as baths, ambulating, feeding, skin care, personal and oral hygiene, and bed making. Other duties include performing dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, toileting, turning, cough and deep breathing exercises, catheter care, and collecting biological specimens. The CNA also prepares patients for discharge, assists with clerical duties like answering telephones and organizing medical records, orients new patients and their significant others to the unit, operates and troubleshoots equipment, and may perform point of care testing.
