The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the Respiratory Care Unit assists in performing a variety of nursing care services for patients. This role involves receiving patient care assignments from the registered nurse (RN) in charge and initiating delegated tasks based on demonstrated competence in performing nursing activities for specific patient age groups. Key responsibilities include collecting and documenting data for admission assessment and reassessment, relaying information via charting and communication to team members, and informing the licensed nurse of any changes in patient condition, complaints, or educational needs. The CNA answers patient calls, takes vital signs, monitors behavior and physical condition, and assists with daily living activities such as baths, ambulating, feeding, skin care, personal and oral hygiene, and bed making. They also perform dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, toileting, turning, cough and deep breathing exercises, catheter care, and collection of biological specimens, as well as measuring and recording fluid intake and output. Additionally, CNAs prepare patients for discharge, stock and maintain supplies, assist with clerical duties, orient new patients, and operate equipment. They may also perform point of care testing and are expected to work in a constant state of alertness and safety.
