About The Position

The Cloud & Linux System Engineer III serves as the primary owner responsible for engineering, securing, and continuously improving Biodesix’s cloud platforms and Linux-based systems in support of regulated healthcare diagnostics. This role ensures stability, performance, and security of production environments while enabling the deployment of new applications, data services, and infrastructure capabilities that directly support our clinical and commercial operations. This role sets standards for cloud and Linux engineering practices and serves as a subject matter expert for regulated infrastructure environments. This position collaborates closely with security, software development, data engineering, and laboratory operations teams to maintain compliant, scalable, and highly available cloud environments.

Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 6-10+ years of IT experience supporting production cloud and Linux systems
  • Demonstrated AWS architecture and security engineering experience
  • Strong Linux system administration and shell scripting experience
  • Understanding of cloud and network security best practices
  • Experience with configuration/automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.)
  • Familiarity with firewalls, routing, DNS, TLS, and identity access concepts
  • Containerization experience (Docker; Kubernetes a plus)
  • Database administration experience (MySQL, SQL, Postgres)
  • Must demonstrate strong skills in the following areas: analytical thinking, problem solving, communication, commitment to teamwork, and organization in a fast-paced, evolving environment

  • CI/CD tooling familiarity

Responsibilities

  • Cloud Platform Administration (AWS)
  • Act as a subject matter expert for AWS workloads supporting CLIA/CAP/ISO-controlled laboratory systems.
  • Design, implement, and manage scalable, secure cloud environments using AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, etc.).
  • Optimize AWS infrastructure for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Implement and maintain IAM roles, policies, VPC architecture, and network security controls.
  • Manage cloud-based backup, DR policies, and recovery procedures.
  • Maintain audit readiness for system configurations, access controls, and change records.
  • Linux Systems Engineering
  • Install, configure, secure, and maintain Linux-based servers and associated services.
  • Perform system updates, patches, kernel updates, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Monitor performance, troubleshoot system issues, and tune resource utilization.
  • Support and manage services and architectures including Apache, MySQL/Postgres, Docker, and related components.
  • Automate recurring tasks using shell scripting and/or configuration management tools.
  • Operational & Cross-Functional Responsibilities
  • Lead complex troubleshooting and root-cause investigations with cross-functional partners
  • Define and maintain infrastructure patterns, implementation standards, and automation frameworks
  • Identify system risks proactively and drives remediation plans to closure
  • Contribute to infrastructure roadmap direction and technology adoption strategy
  • Partner with development and DevOps teams to support CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
  • Maintain structured documentation for configurations, procedures, standards, and infrastructure changes.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and after-action reporting.
  • Provide Tier 3 support and escalate critical issues as required.
  • Support ticketing, ITIL-aligned change processes, and on-call rotation for production systems.
  • Contribute to departmental goals, continuous improvement, and IT modernization initiatives
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, enabling skill development in cloud and Linux engineering practices.
