About The Position

If so, this COO/Executive Director of Nursing role in the Providence Medical Group (PMG) Montana Service Area invites you to lead with purpose and impact. The Role: The Chief Operating Officer & Executive Director of Nursing (COO/EDON) provides dual operational and nursing leadership for Providence Medical Group (PMG) – Montana Service Area. This role: Supports employed and contracted physicians and holds accountability for standards of nursing practice across PMG. Partners with executive leadership on strategy development and execution. Has direct accountability for Primary Care, First Step, the FQHC project, and specialty clinics not aligned with a service ‑ line leader. Provides system ‑ level support to service ‑ line leaders and staff regarding nursing scope, policy, and operational improvements. Owns care delivery operations and quality, provider/staff/patient engagement and satisfaction, and onboarding for patients, providers, and staff. The COO/EDON advances MSA ‑ wide standardization, clinical integration, and consolidation to deliver a seamless continuum of care, aligned to reimbursement realities and PMG strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Public Affairs, Health Administration, or related field
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required if Master’s is not in Nursing
  • 8+ years of senior leadership, including multi ‑ facility/site leadership
  • 4+ years leading multiple facilities/sites/clinics/departments
  • 2+ years leading teams with demonstrated professional development
  • 1+ year clinical background/experience in area of responsibility
  • Operational & Financial Acumen Strong knowledge of clinic operations, physician group practices, financial management, cost analysis, information systems, and insurance contracts Understanding of physician compensation design, trends, and contracts; physician payment mechanisms and strategies Ability to support physician growth and maintain market competitiveness
  • Leadership & Competencies Proven ability to lead complex organizations through transition and growth in a matrixed environment Establish structures and systems that achieve administrative and clinical integration Demonstrated problem‑solving, decision‑making, and timely consensus building Effective at change leadership, education, and credible oversight of management teams Ability to form relationships across diverse groups; strong communication and listening skills Comfortable leading in a Catholic‑sponsored organization

Responsibilities

  • Plan & Align Lead annual and multi‑year financial and operational plans for PMG; coach leaders on objectives and progress. Apply evidence‑based practice and strategic analysis to guide decisions; identify scenarios and implications; set priorities and execute decisively. Participate in PMG strategic planning and budget formation with the RCE Medical Group, Regional Operations, and MSA Physician Chief Executive.
  • Organize & Execute Design organizational structures and management systems that enable administrative and clinical integration across sites. Maintain current organizational charts and coordinated information flow for efficient operations. Lead integration strategies (program development, quality, fiscal management, compliance, clinical management, physician relationships, outcomes, reimbursement).
  • Lead People & Culture Demonstrate expert leadership in communication, delegation, judgment, and listening . Ensure equitable talent practices : selection, motivation, development, and performance accountability. Build a culture of professional growth, feedback, recognition , and constructive accountability; complete evaluations on time; hold regular staff meetings. Lead management orientation and continuing education ; mentor leaders through change.
  • Control & Improve Ensure timely, accurate, efficient operational performance; measure against objectives and regulatory standards. Provide prompt feedback and corrective action ; set clear performance standards (competency, productivity, PI, resource use, outcomes). Establish and monitor a Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement plan: gather data, resolve deficiencies, and sustain improvements.
  • Ethics, Confidentiality & Safety Uphold an ethical and moral framework in all decisions; safeguard rights of staff, patients, and the organization. Maintain strict confidentiality of patient, medical staff, and employee information. Champion a safe environment: Environment of Care, Infection Control, Exposure Control ; model consistent use of PPE and safety practices.
  • Clinical Operations & Experience Administer well‑organized departments delivering high‑quality, cost-effective care ; keep policies current and integrated. Co‑lead (with physician leadership) programs to monitor, evaluate, and improve the six IOM aims : safe, effective, patient‑centered, timely, efficient, equitable. Lead recruitment and retention for staff; ensure ongoing development and staffing adequacy. Advance service excellence and a positive, respectful, inclusive environment.
  • Physician & Community Relations Build and maintain collaborative relationships with medical staff; establish communication channels for physician input. Foster effective business relationships across physician leaders, hospital leaders, payers, and the community; integrate physician leaders into decision‑making.
  • Technology, Data & Strategy Enablement Partner with information systems teams to ensure appropriate technological support. Identify clinical improvement opportunities; integrate care services and pathways. Provide support for credentialing/re‑credentialing and contracting . Lead recruitment for key management roles; oversee PMG recruitment and new provider orientation .
  • Governance, Standards & Special Initiatives Champion the Pathways to Excellence journey in PMG Montana . Participate in PMG MOR and assigned infrastructure functions. Sustain professional affiliations to keep current with industry trends .
